Campus Compact's 20th Anniversary Draws Crowd of One Thousand
October 16-17, 2006, Chicago, IL
As Campus Compact completed its 20th year, a two-day event in Chicago was held to celebrate the enormous impact of the organization's work to support campus-community collaborations that strengthen communities while teaching students civic skills and values. It also provided a venue for member presidents, community service directors, students, community partners, and others to chart a course for the work of Campus Compact as it enters its third decade. More than 1,000 people attended the event, co-sponsored by the Campus Compact national office and Illinois Campus Compact. Look for a detailed summary in the coming issue of The Current, Campus Compact's newsletter.
The 20th Anniversary Visioning Papers are a collection of essays commissioned by Campus Compact to outline the future of the organization and its work. The essays are still open discussion and revision.
The slideshow from the Gala is now online in gallery format, as is the first of several speeches. Also online is a photo gallery with photos provided by Lousisiana Campus Compact, California Campus Compact, and the National Campus Compact.
With gratitude for helping us prepare college students for lives grounded in civic engagement, we wish you the very best as you chart the course for the next two decades of Campus Compact and its work in Illinois. Rod R. Blagojevich, Governor of Illinois
Campus Compact has mobilized 20 million students to participate in community service during the past 20 years. In 2004-2005, students in this nation-wide coalition of colleges and universities contributed an estimated $5.6 billion in service to their communities.
This celebration marks two decades of success, growing from an idea of four college presidents to more than 980 campuses and 31 state offices. As the largest network in higher education that promotes and facilitates service-learning and civic engagement, Campus Compact ensures college students are educated to assume their civic responsibilities.
Illinois Campus Compact was established with 12 charter higher education institutions in 1993. ILCC is a coalition of 39 member campuses that bond together to actively engage presidents, faculty, staff and students to promote a renewed vision of higher education — one that supports not only the civic development of students, but the campus as an active and engaged member of its community.
Over the past two years, Illinois Campus Compact has funded 9 McCormick Presidential Civic Engagement Fellows, 20 State Farm Faculty Fellows, 25 McCormick Raise Your Voice Student Fellows, and 123 Education Awards Fellows. In the last academic year, Illinois Campus Compact conducted conferences and training sessions for more than 1,000 participants, including presidents, faculty, staff, students and community partners.
