Louis S. Albert

Louis S. Albert is President of the West Campus of Pima Community College. Albert came to Pima Community College in 2003 following five years as Vice Chancellor for Educational Services at the San Jose Evergreen Community College District. From 1982-1998, Albert served as Vice President of AAHE. Before AAHE, Albert was a faculty member, Chair of the Division of Allied Health, and Dean of Instruction at Essex Community College in Maryland.

During his sixteen year tenure at AAHE, Albert was responsible for organizing the National Conference on Higher Education, supporting the work of AAHE’s member caucuses, and creating program initiatives in service-learning, school/college collaboration, and the educational uses of information technologies. Albert worked closely with Edward Zlotkowski to implement AAHE’s Service-Learning in the Disciplines monograph project. In collaboration with AAHE Black Caucus leaders, Albert organized study tours to Ghana and Zimbabwe during the 1990’s.

Albert is a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Partnership for Service-Learning and served as Chair of the IPSL Board from 1996-2003. His prior board service included a term as chair of the Advisory Board of the National Center for Post-Secondary Teaching, Learning and Assessment.

Albert has held full or part-time faculty positions at Essex Community College, the Johns Hopkins University School of Health Services, Iowa State University, and the University of Denver.

Albert earned his Master of Science in Zoology and Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Maryland. Albert holds a B.S. in Biology from Loyola College of Maryland. In 2001, he was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) from Cuttington University in the West African nation of Liberia.
