The following letter was sent along with the Fall 2006 Compact Current Current.
Dear Campus Compact Member,
I am delighted to present to you this special issue of the Compact Current, which summarizes highlights of our 20th anniversary event in Chicago this October. It was a fitting celebration of Campus Compact’s outstanding accomplishments and the superb leadership of Liz Hollander, who is retiring after 10 years at the organization’s helm.
Equally important, however, was the examination of the opportunities and challenges that face us in advancing campus-based civic and community engagement. As Campus Compact’s new president, I was energized by the dialogue and grateful for this unique introduction to the organization.
Working with campuses across the country to embed civic engagement into all aspects of higher education has been the core of our work for the past 20 years and will be our guiding force as we move into the future. As the only higher education association dedicated solely to advancing this work, Campus Compact is uniquely positioned to lead this movement.
Campus Compact’s structure is also unique. We are a coalition of college and university presidents, who provide strong leadership; at the same time, our state affiliates and our work with students, faculty, and community service and service-learning directors give us deep connections to work at the grassroots level. It is this multifaceted approach that allows for innovation and success.
During the coming years, Campus Compact will continue to provide leadership, resources, and advocacy in support of civic education, community building, and campus engagement. I encourage you all to play a greater role as we take this work to the next level, and invite your ideas and feedback at any time.
With heartfelt appreciation for your commitment to Campus Compact, I extend best wishes for a New Year filled with peace and joy.
Sincerely,
Maureen F. Curley
President
