Montana Tech is a public, four-year institution granting degrees in math, science and engineering. The Technical Outreach Department strives to connect students’ academic experiences to critical community needs. The VISTA project will build the capacity of service-learning initiatives by engaging students, faculty, and student clubs with nonprofit agencies in the surrounding area to collaborate on projects within the community which are related to students’ scholastic and professional goals, making students’ theoretical classroom lessons relevant to real life. The Montana Tech Service-Learning project addresses poverty on several levels. Firstly, community organizations are able to better deliver their services to community members through the volunteerism of Montana Tech students. These poverty areas are as wide-ranging as the service sites. Secondly, Montana Tech students are exposed to community service and volunteerism in a specialized and unique way, tailored to their academic pursuits. Long-term, this has great implications, as it suggests increased civic engagement and employment in service fields that are focused on alleviating poverty – again, as broad as the chosen disciplines.

Member Duties: The VISTA with Montana Tech Service-Learning will build the capacity of the program through the following duties: -Present service-learning opportunities within the community to undergraduate students, faculty members, staff and administration in all academic departments on campus -Develop the recruitment of students for specific service-learning opportunities -Connect with various nonprofit agencies and organizations throughout the community to identify critical student service-learning project needs -Engage students, faculty and staff with nonprofit community organizations and agencies for collaboration on specific projects -Follow-up with faculty members and service site supervisors regarding individual student progress -Organize reflection activities with participating students via group meetings and Blackboard website -Work with faculty and departments to incorporate service-learning into the curriculum for future courses and programs

It cultivates the common ground that exists between the educational mission of the College and the needs of non-profit organizations and neighborhoods. It does so by creating teaching and learning opportunities that simultaneously build the capacity of TCNJ students and these groups and communities. Students become more knowledgeable, skilled and civic minded—while community partners gain additional resources to effectuate positive change. Visit us at http://bonner.pages.tcnj.edu/

MLOV seeks the placement of one AmeriCorps*VISTA Member to serve as full-time Communications and Partnerships Coordinator who will work under the supervision of the Director.

Background:

The inability of constituents to gain access to services in their language often leads to a variety of problems that are costly, time-consuming, and sometimes dangerous for the well-being of clients and the organizations themselves. Approximately one in six residents in the District speak a language other than English at home – in 2000 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the LEP/NEP population of the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area at close to half a million.

In 2004, the D.C. Language Access Coalition and its partners in the City Council and the Mayor’s Office succeeded in passing the D.C. Language Access Act, a law that recognizes the need for language access and requires government agencies and the organizations they fund to provide interpretation services, translate documents into the District’s predominant languages, and take other measures to improve the distribution of services to these populations.

In 2010 the Coalition brought on Sapna Pandya, now the Executive Director of the Coalition’s administering organization, Many Languages One Voice (MLOV). When MLOV was incorporated in 2010, it further expanded the Coalition’s capacity through the advocacy and organizing projects that give voice to community members and make progress to improve language access programs. The inability of constituents to gain access to services in their language often leads to a variety of problems that are costly, time‐consuming, and sometimes dangerous for the well‐being of clients and the organizations themselves.

One of the founding and most active members of the DC Language Access Coalition is the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC). APALRC is the legal advocate for justice for the Asian American community of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Working in partnership with APA communities, the APALRC addresses the individual legal needs of low‐income and limited‐English proficient Asian Americans, advocates for broad‐based systemic change on legal and civil rights issues impacting Asian Americans, and empowers APA community members through organizing strategies. The APALRC works closely with the other members of the DC Language Access Coalition (DCLAC) to promote Language Access in the District of Columbia.

In 2010 the Coalition brought on Sapna Pandya, now the executive director of the Coalition’s administering organization, Many Languages One Voice. MLOV further expanded the Coalition’s capacity through the advocacy and organizing projects that give voice to community members and make progress to improve language access programs. The primary mission of Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) is to empower Limited English Proficient /Non English Proficient (LEP/NEP) individuals and communities to equitably access public benefits and services in the District of Columbia.

MLOV seeks the placement of one AmeriCorps*VISTA Member to serve as the Community Outreach Coordinator/Development Associate who will work under the supervision of the Executive Directors of MLOV and APALRC.

Job Responsibilities:
Outreach on behalf of MLOV (25% of time):
•Conduct outreach and build rapport with LEP/NEP leaders and community members while maintaining a log of activities and best practices for reaching out to these groups;
• Assist MLOV Communications and Partnerships VISTA in maintaining contact with Coalition member organizations;
• Contact Coalition member organizations to collaborate on events and see how MLOV can assist to build capacity, including, but not limited to, promoting their programs and events;
• Coordinate and conduct “Know Your Rights” trainings on Language Access;
• Maintain database and communication with staff about upcoming outreach events, such as “Know Your Rights” trainings;
• Support the completion of the MLOV/DCLAC Language Access Report by conducting surveys and interviews with LEP community members regarding their experiences with language barriers/access in the District;
•Conduct strategic outreach for the MLOV organizing programs (Health, Education, and the Nail Salon Project) in collaboration with program organizers to promote their events and work;
•Help organize and attend community events & outreach events in collaboration with MLOV staff;
• Maintain relationships with the Mayor’s Constituent Offices regarding opportunities for outreach at community events;
• Attend events and meetings to represent language access and MLOV program work.
Resource Development for APALRC (75% of time):
•Maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files.
•Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate foundation and individual donors.
•Maintain a tracking system to monitor grant proposals and report status including submissions, responses, renewals and reporting requirements.
•Coordinate productions and mailing of spring and year‐end appeal letters.
•Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.
•Maintain guest lists, gather and prepare registration materials and other duties as assigned for fund‐raising events.
•Prepare media materials for distribution. (i.e. copying, filing, mailing, e‐mailing)
•Assemble media and donor kits for events and meetings.
•Regularly update the organization’s website.
•Other duties as assigned by the Marketing and Donor Relations Coordinator and/or the Executive Director of APALRC.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have prior work experience and/or have completed graduate or undergraduate studies from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Anthropology, Modern Languages, Community Development, Non‐Profit Management, International Relations, Globalization, Pre‐Law, or another Social Sciences‐related field.
• Possess strong interpersonal communication skills and be motivated, self‐starter able to work independently and as a team player;
• Posses strong writing skills, organization, multi‐tasking skills, and creativity;
• Outgoing personality and comfortable with public speaking and interacting with diverse populations;
• Bilingual required in languages such as Spanish, Chinese, French, Vietnamese, Korean and/or Amharic;
• Must demonstrate an understanding of and interest in immigrant issues and be culturally competent;
• Adaptable to changing environments and multiple deadlines;
• Experience living in non‐English speaking communities or in communities where candidate was not proficient in the dominant language;
• Excellent Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint required;
• Experience working in small, grassroots, community nonprofit organizations is a plus.

Vermont Campus Compact is looking for people to fight poverty as organizers, collaborators, and catalysts for change as AmeriCorps*VISTA members. Each member will serve one year at a participating college or community organization, mobilizing the resources of higher education to serve the needs of the community and effect sustainable change. Working with students, faculty, administration, and local communities and schools, VISTA members will build volunteer capacity and develop programs directed at pulling people out of poverty.

Our 2011-2012 VISTA program goals are focused on education; all VCC VISTA members will develop programming on campuses and in the community focused on improving college aspirations for K-12 students, with a particular focus area on individuals from low-income populations. The goal of these programs and activities is to increase the belief that college is an option and increase access to higher education. VISTA members will work to build capacity for campuses, schools and organizations so that programs and activities developed will be sustained after their service.

Eight VISTA positions and one VISTA leader position are available at the following campuses/organizations: Castleton State College, Champlain College, Lyndon State College, Middlebury College, Norwich University, Southern Vermont College, Vermont Student Assistance Corporation and Vermont Campus Compact.
