Summer of Service
ICP proposed a national Summer of Service (SOS) program to help communities create positive alternatives for middle school students during summer vacations. In the summer months, the lack of constructive activities and opportunities for young people often results in academic decline, risky behavior, and an increased likelihood of failing to make the transition to high school. Yet, when young people participate in service activities they are better able to control their own lives in a positive way, avoid risky behaviors, strengthen their community connections and become more engaged in their own education. A national SOS would enable a large number of young teens to participate in service as a “rite of passage” from middle to high school and provide opportunities for them to enter their teenage years with a positive experience that reinforces community connections, enlivens their education, and strengthens personal and civic values. At the same time, communities across America might find an important new resource in their own backyards – young people who are ready to serve, if only they are asked and provided the opportunity to do so.

ICP’s three-year initiative will promote SOS as an effective strategy that can be utilized by college access organizations and networks, as well as other educational, out-of-school and youth development organizations to increase young people’s access to and success in college. Through this initiative, ICP aims to provide high quality resources and assistance to organizations interested in designing, implementing, evaluation and improving SOS programs.

About the Service Fellow Program
Innovations in Civic Participation created the Service Fellow Program in order to expose recent college graduates with an interest in service and civic participation to the workings of an internationally focused non-profit organization. ICP is structured to afford each Fellow the opportunity to work closely with a small team dedicated to improving opportunities for young people around the world to play an important role in addressing critical community needs.

About Innovations in Civic Participation
Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP) is a nonprofit organization supporting the development of innovative high-quality youth civic engagement policies and programs both in the US and around the world.

ICP is a leader in the global movement to promote sustainable development and social change through youth civic engagement. We embrace a positive view of young people that recognizes their potential to create beneficial and lasting social change in their communities through active participation in service opportunities.

The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world. This highly competitive program aims to identify the most talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to education. Like all Spencer Foundation programs, the Dissertation Fellowship program receives many more applications than it can fund. This year, up to 600 applications are anticipated and about 20 fellowships will be awarded.

Youth Service America is pleased to launch the first annual Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards to recognize two young female social entrepreneurs, ages 14 to 17, whose initiatives serve the common good. The awards are created in memory of Gladys Coccia, who began her entrepreneurial career when she was a young girl in West Virginia and later became a very successful businesswoman in Washington, DC. Nominations from across the country are welcome; special consideration will be given to nominees from West Virginia and metropolitan Washington, DC. Self-nominations are accepted. To access the eligibility quiz and the nomination form, visit www.ysa.org/awards or email coccia {at} ysa(.)org

About Mrs. Coccia

The award program is created in honor of Mrs. Gladys Marinelli Coccia – a business woman and entrepreneur since she was 15 years old until she passed away in 2007, at the age of 93. The grandmother of YSA Board Member Brian Murrow, Gladys grew up in southern West Virginia and moved to the Washington DC area in 1961 where she was well-known in the Italian American business community as the owner and operator of Marinelli’s Delicatessen, which she established in 1962 and managed for the subsequent 30 years.

During the 12 years he served as a Senator from Minnesota, Paul D. Wellstone earned a reputation as an advocate for social justice and as an outspoken champion for those who lack a voice in the national arena. Senator Wellstone was also a strong and vocal proponent of high-quality, affordable health care for all. To honor his life and legacy, Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, established the Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice in 2004.

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice is designed to foster the advancement of social justice through participation in health care advocacy work that focuses on the unique challenges facing many communities of color.

Through this fellowship, Families USA hopes to expand the pool of talented social justice advocates from underrepresented economic, racial and ethnic minority groups, including black/African American, Latino, Native American, and Asian and Pacific Islander communities. The goals of the Wellstone Fellowship program are three-fold:

To address disparities in access to health care;

To inspire Wellstone Fellows to continue to work for social justice throughout their lives; and

To increase the number and racial and ethnic diversity of up-and-coming social justice advocates and leaders.

Families USA will select one talented and motivated candidate to fill this 12-month fellowship.

Range of Awards: $30k – $1,000,000.00

Eligible Applicants: Eligible applicants include state governments, county governments, city or township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public and state controlled institutions of higher education, Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized), Nonprofits having a 501©(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education and private institutions of higher education.

Description: As part of its We the People initiative, NEH invites proposals for challenge grants designed to help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for humanities activities focused on exploring significant themes and events in American history. NEH is particularly interested in projects that advance knowledge of the founding principles of the United States in their full historical and institutional context.

Grants may be used to support long-term costs such as construction and renovation, purchase of equipment, acquisitions, and conservation of collections. Grants may also be used to establish or enhance endowments that generate expendable earnings for program activities.

Because of the matching requirements, these NEH grants also strengthen the humanities by encouraging nonfederal sources of support.

Applications are welcome from colleges and universities, museums, public libraries, research institutions, historical societies and historic sites, public television and radio stations, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other nonprofit entities. Programs that involve the collaboration of multiple institutions are eligible, as well, but one institution must serve as the lead agent and formal applicant of record.

A powerful force for community revitalization is gaining momentum across the country: university-community partnerships. In growing numbers, institutions of higher education are collaborating with community groups to apply research, scholarship, and service to real-life problems. They are integrating such partnerships into their curriculum, academic studies, and student activities, making them part of their ongoing mission. America’s institutions of higher education have more intellectual talent than any other institutions in our society, and many of them are using these partnerships to tackle the complex socioeconomic issues facing the neighborhoods that surround them, such as poverty, joblessness, crime, and homelessness.

Recognizing the crucial role that America’s institutions of higher education can play in rebuilding communities large and small, HUD established the Office of University Partnerships (OUP) in 1994 to encourage and expand the efforts of institutions of higher education that are striving to make a difference in their communities through funding opportunities. Whether the institution has a venerable history of reaching out to lower income neighborhoods or is just beginning to explore the potential of such partnerships, OUP can help increase the scope, effectiveness, and sustainability of its community-building efforts.

The Office is responsible for running nine grant programs:

Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities
Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program
Community Development Work Study Program
Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant Program
Early Doctoral Student Research Grant Program
Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program
Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities Program
Tribal Colleges and Universities Program
Universities Rebuilding America Partnerships (URAP)

Last year NC Campus Compact awarded $25,000 in out-of-network funds to 28 institutions who mobilized 5800 volunteers on the 2009 MLK Day of Service.

Grants are available in increments of $1,000 and $2,500. Institutions in the following states are not eligible to apply for an out-of-network grant because the Campus Compact state office applied for an in-network grant: Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Applications are accepted from institutions in any state not mentioned above. We strongly encourage applications on behalf of a group/coalition of institutions, but please note that only one institution can serve as the subgrantee.

 1. To address disparities in access to health care;
2. To inspire Wellstone Fellows to continue to work for social justice throughout their lives; and
3. To increase the number and racial and ethnic diversity of up-and-coming social justice advocates and leaders.

Families USA will select one talented and motivated candidate to fill this 12-month fellowship.
