Designed for faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines, this professional development travel seminar will probe the enduring legacy of colonialism. You will examine your responsibility as educators to understand the colonial dynamics and the strategies being employed in indigenous communities to decolonize and to reconstruct more just communities. Special emphasis will be placed on learning about Maya history, culture, human rights and resistance to assimilation. In addition, you will focus on the challenges to building peace, democracy and autonomy for the Maya majority in Guatemala. This seminar will also explore the role that international organizations and committed individuals have played in addressing systems of domination and defending the rights of Indigenous peoples in Guatemala.

Established in 2007, the Works in Progress Seminar provides support and encouragement for a new generation of diverse service-learning researchers. The Seminar teams emerging scholars with experienced researchers and practitioners to develop and advance the development of new scholarly work in field of K-12 service-learning. The Works in Progress program is a national program co-facilitated by the University of Minnesota, Brandeis University, and Tufts University and is funded by a W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant to the National Service-Learning Partnership.

Individuals who are either masters degree students, doctoral students, or post-doctoral researchers and junior faculty within 7 years of receiving their doctoral degrees may apply.

Applicants must currently have in progress a formal research paper or project that advances the study of service-learning in K-12 education. The research may be at any stage (e.g., building of the conceptual framework, creating or testing measures, data collection, etc.), but the work must already be underway.

For more information on the program, eligibility, and application requirements, see http://engagement.umn.edu.

Grad school and Peace Corps — why not do both?

The Peace Corps Master’s International program combines graduate study with Peace Corps service overseas. Prospective students apply simultaneously both to the Peace Corps and the graduate program(s) of their choice, and they typically complete one year of graduate school, then serve 27 months in the Peace Corps, and return to the university to complete any remaining degree requirements.

More than 50 universities — most of which are Campus Compact members — currently partner with the program. Since 1987, the Master’s International program has offered participants a unique opportunity to combine graduate study with significant international service, connecting theory and practice and contributing to the Peace Corps’ first goal: to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
