Bookshare (www.bookshare.org) is a project of Benetech, a non-profit technology company that looks for ways in which technology can benefit humanity. Bookshare is one of its biggest projects — and is currently the largest digital library of accessible books for people who are blind or have other print disabilities. But the collection is far from complete. Our members have a deep passion for reading. Given that less than 5% of the world’s books are available in accessible formats, the need for Bookshare is great. Through an amazing virtual system our community of volunteers helps bridge the gap, book by book.

This exciting internship involves a combination of crucial tasks with Bookshare’s Collection Development department which is responsible for growing our online library of accessible books for people with print disabilities. Responsibilities include:

Running quality checks on books that have been scanned and submitted to the collection

Proofreading high priority scanned books for the collection

Assisting with the creation of a proofreading manual for partner organizations

Running inventory checks on books ordered for processing

We are looking for people with the following qualities:

Attention to detail

Excellent written communication skills

Ability to work independently

A passion for reading, and an interest in working with a non-profit at the intersection of books, technology and disability service

City Year for Kids is a fun, and educational week-long vacation camp that City Year Boston runs during the winter and spring school vacations. We provide a safe, engaging place for children to go who may not otherwise have adult supervision when school is out. The camps are located at four sites throughout Boston, serving roughly 700 children. During the camps, pairs of corps members and volunteers lead teams of 10-12 elementary school children.

This year’s winter program, runs from Monday February 15th through Friday February 19th, and would be an excellent volunteer opportunity for your organization. Volunteers are welcome to volunteer for just one day or all four. Volunteers will also be required to attend one training prior to the camp.

Overview of the Spiritual Empowerment of Junior Youth Program

The Magdalene Carney Bahá\’í Institute (MCBI) is a non-profit organization providing educational and service programs to children, youth, and adults of all faiths and denominations. These programs are designed to empower individuals by developing their spiritual and intellectual capacities for the purpose of service to their community. The Institute serves communities and neighborhoods in five States: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Recognizing the inherent, growing, and untapped capacity of junior youth (11-14 years old) to contribute towards the betterment of the world, the Spiritual Empowerment of Junior Youth Program at MCBI is designed to assist them in navigating this crucial stage of their life, developing a moral structure as well as their powers of expression, all for the purpose of empowering them to direct their energies toward the advancement of civilization. In these years of transition for a historically underestimated, misunderstood, and neglected portion of our population the physical, emotional, and mental changes take on special significance in the context of emerging new powers, awareness, and consciousness. Therefore, it is in this period when the junior youth in this program embark on a life dedicated to the service of humanity.

The Institute provides training and practice for youth and young adults (usually 18-35) to form junior youth groups that meet once a week to explore concepts of justice, unity, cooperation, and equality in the context of their daily lives. Through a process of action and reflection — and most central to the purpose of these junior youth groups — they strive to apply this learning in their own neighborhoods and communities through service activities. Those who become trained are called an “animator” whose multifaceted role is one of being a true friend who helps the junior youth remain hopeful and assured that they will not only protect themselves against the negative influences of society, but will recognize their nobility as human beings and dedicate their lives to act as unifying forces and champions of justice and service. As they engage in these activities, they find themselves in the company of like-minded individuals who become their co-workers in this process of building up a new civilization.

The facilitation of these groups acknowledges the need for the junior youth to be the animating force of their endeavors and for them to express their hopes and needs – a junior youth group for junior youth by junior youth. The animator assists them in articulating and accomplishing the group’s evolving goals by creating an environment of mutual support conducive to developing the perception and patterns of thought and behavior that will characterize them as contributors to the betterment of humanity.

Training sessions are designed to reach out to interested youth and young adults in pursuing this unique volunteer opportunity. MCBI offers both weekend intensive training sessions at the institute or weekly training sessions in communities themselves. In an experiential learning method, the training emphasizes learning through practice and thus all volunteers will be accompanied by experienced animators until they feel comfortable and confident in their skills to establish and sustain a junior youth group of their own. MCBI primarily focuses on establishing junior youth groups in neighborhoods or in collaboration with after-school programs, youth organizations, and youth programs.

This project is looking for volunteers to assist locals in building one of the worlds best ecological treks. It will pass by several waterfalls, one of them being 3 times as high as the Eiffel Tower. Each volunteer has the option of being assigned a team of local Andean Natives who will do the heavy work of excavating and constructing the path, or lighter duties such as planting indigenous flora, teaching English in local schools, or other community support. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to assist and support the local community in becoming the caretakers and sole benefactors of this natural wonder.

Volunteers pay £12 per day to hire their own team of village workers. Lodging in the area costs around £4.50 per day plus food. An all-inclusive package is available if you want the project leader to make all the arrangements for your stay.

The Ignite Greensboro [got two] Project is a project aimed at restoring a sense of obligation to the community of Greensboro and beyond. This project deals with promoting student shareholdership of the International Civil Rights Museum by collecting $2 from each student, symbolizing a cup of coffee. The same cups of coffee that the A&T four sat down and attempted to order, but were refused. The $2 contribution more importantly symbolizes student and community ownership of the museum.

….and the beauty of this project is that it is student-led and student-run!

This project aims to reach out to every individual of every race and ethnic background. When the International Civil Rights Museum opens downtown on February 1, 2010, it will benefit everyone and will not exclude anyone.

The mission of The Ignite Greensboro [got two?] Project is to promote student and community shareholdership of the International Civil Rights Museum, ultimately leading to the increased awareness of local historical and cultural establishments. This project will serve as a way of restoring a sense of obligation to Greensboro and beyond, and will strive to engage and encourage active roles within the city of Greensboro under a conglomerate of different and interrelated projects.

The project will last for the duration of a year and the funds raised will be donated to the museum as a part of a fund. Part to the museum itself, part to bringing speakers from the national, international and local stage into the city of Greensboro. They will talk about their lives during the Civil Rights Era, their dreams and aspirations during that time and what they want us as a generation to take from those experiences, to apply them to our lives to ultimately make us better citizens. Part of the money will go scholarships that will serve four brackets: Elementary, Middle School, High School and College students. Contests will be enacted, and there will be an art entity and an essay entity. All will have to deal with the history of Greensboro. An annual celebratory gala will ensue. The last part of the funds we raise will go to fund service efforts that we take part in for years to come.

There will be an interest meeting and training on May 30, 2009 at the Downtown Greensboro Public Library [Central Location]. This meeting will cover the basics of the program: How the program started, the goals of the project and the brief history of the soon to come civil rights museum. The training will cover canvassing etiquette and will talk about the tools and supplies of the upcoming exhibition day in the beginning of June.
