Andrew Furco

Andrew Furco is Associate Vice President for Public Engagement at the University of Minnesota, where he also serves as an Associate Professor in the College of Education and Human Development and as Director of the University’s International Center for the Study of Public Engagement and Service-Learning (ICS-PESL). ICS-PESL is an expanded version of the service-learning research center Furco started at UC Berkeley in 1994, which hosted the nation’s first conference on service-learning research in 2001. The conference has since been offered annually, and it also spawned the establishment of the International Association for Research on Community Engagement and Service-Learning (IARSLCE). Furco’s research on community service and service-learning in K-12 education has focused on a variety of issues related to pedagogy, educational policy, and school reform. In higher education, he is best known for his work on service-learning institutionalization. Furco spent four years (1998-2002) as one of Campus Compact’s Engaged Scholars and developed a rubric that has been used by more than 300 institutions. Furco has presented his research in Australia, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe and serves on many boards, including the National Review Board for the Scholarship of Engagement, the IARSLCE, the International Values Education Research Consortium, the International Center for Service-Learning in Teacher Education, and the Higher Education Network for Community Engagement. At the University of Minnesota, Furco is working to expand the work of the research center; to systematize assessment of the scope, breadth, and depth of engagement activities across the university; and to connect further public engagement work with faculty scholarship, student academic learning, and other key university initiatives such as interdisciplinary research and teaching and international education. Furco holds a bachelors degree in music and a masters degree in special education, both from UCLA. He received his doctorate in educational administration from UC Berkeley, where he studied the role of student community engagement in achieving the purported purposes of education.
