Gail has comprehensive experience in creating and institutionalizing a formal service-learning program. She also has expertise in faculty development, assessment, capacity building with community partners, and curricular service opportunities for students. She is one of four mentors in the American Association of Community Colleges Program Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service-Learning during 2006-2009.

She is an outstanding leader in our network and always willing to partner and share her expertise with her colleagues.

Dr. Lynn is great at facilitating conversations around civic reflection and getting folks to think “outside of the box” as it comes to reflecting on the work we do. National Campus Compact brought her to the Network Directors’ Meeting in Austin, Texas, in January 2008. She and the Project on Civic Reflection have been a jewel to have in our state — they should be shared at the national level.

Richard Kendrick (Ph.D., Syracuse University) is the founding director of SUNY Cortland’s Institute for Civic Engagement. He has held this position for the past five years, and he has been a service-learning practitioner since 1994. He oversees a program that includes service-learning, community outreach, and economic development initiatives. He has been successful at working with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to attract funding from local, state, and national funding sources (e.g., the MacDonald Foundation, New York Campus Compact, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission). At the same time he has been successful at institutionalizing the college’s commitment to its civic mission. He has published on service-learning in the discipline of sociology, the effects of service-learning, and on student participation in the electoral process. SUNY Cortland is affiliated with New York Campus Compact and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ American Democracy Project, it is on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, and it recently obtained Carnegie Foundation recognition in its Community Engagement category. Marilynn Fleckenstein

Dr. Fleckenstein has held both academic/institutional leadership and faculty teaching positions, has been active internationally as a
speaker, as well as broadly in this country. She knows the innards of service-learning pedagogy, as well as the larger issues of civic engagement, campus/community partnerships, and engaged scholarship.
