Partnership between Quinnipiac University, Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School, Barnard Elementary School and the Roncalli Nursing Home.

Goals: Our goal is to create a sustainable partnership between university students and faculty, public school students and a long tern care facility. This service learning project provides opportunities for university volunteers, to work with elementary and secondary students and residents of the Roncalli Nursing Home in structured ways. Through a variety of intergenerational activities, students and older adults to rotate the roles of teacher and learner. Activities are designed to allow the students to learn from the older adults and the older adults to learn from the children. The students benefit from the focus on academic and social skills as well as character development through service to others. The intergenerational activities allow the older adults to function as both teachers and learners, and have demonstrable therapeutic value. A major goal of the Kidz Corps project is to improve computer access and computer literacy for both the children and the older adults. We hope to create a sense of community that links the various generations and reduces the digital-divide.

This nationwide program represents a five-year, $5 million effort funded by WorldCom that will link schools and community based organizations with a wide range of local colleges and universities to implement educational technology projects for children in grades K-12. The aim of the program is to increase the use of technology for educational attainment and civic engagement by preparing children and parents in underserved communities for success in a technology-based world.

Campus Compact has selected 20 partnership sites to receive an average of $40,000 per year for the next two years, with an opportunity to renew those grants for an additional three years. The decisions to fund these projects were arrived at after a rigorous review and selection process that involved careful assessment of 164 proposals that resulted from disseminating 344 requests for proposals. The external review committee consisted of experts from community-based organizations, schools and colleges.

In Aprender Mediante Amistad (Learning Through Friendship), a program at Colorado College, students tutor and build friendships with families new to the United States. Two evenings a week, the group of college students meets with adult immigrants and their children to tutor them one-on-one in reading, math, and computer skills. Following the tutoring sessions, the group as a whole meets to play games in Spanish and English designed to build self-esteem and confidence. On Friday evenings, students meet with the families for a weekly movie night. Taken together, these activities serve to educate both the college students and their students about one another s culture.
