The Norwich University Consulting Corps is comprised of faculty, experienced in service-learning, who advocate the integration of service-learning into curricula and consult with colleagues on service-learning initiatives.

The Consultants undergo a competitive selection process and, once selected, are under contract for two years. They educate the campus community in the pedagogy of service-learning, with emphasis on faculty education, and reinforce the awareness raised by the Service-Learning Coordinator. They receive an intensive one-day training in service-learning, meet bi-monthly as a team, and consult with faculty colleagues regularly.

For many service-learning efforts, the biggest obstacle to assessing student impact is that they have never established what impact they intend to have. Articulating goals from the outset is a simple, but vital, step. Azusa Pacific University in Ontario, California, asks students to articulate their goals for the semester in a learning contract. This helps to set uniform expectations for service while lending professional credibility to the service experience. The stated goals form the basis for reflection later in the course and can be used by faculty to assess student learning and by community supervisors to assess student service.

A project at Colorado State University served a variety of audiences providing services for low-income families, and enlisting the help of juvenile offenders who gained a sense of usefulness and self-esteem by helping to provide a service for others. Julie Sieving, a mechanical engineering student designed a domestic solar water heating system which could be easily manufactured and sold for a low price to low-income families. The second side of the service effort arose when it came time to manufacture the water heaters. Youth in the juvenile branch of Larimer County Community Corrections built and assembled the heaters, taking pride in the fact that their work would benefit others in the community.

Our educational model for our first-year students is unique. Our Autumn (August) Term, resulting in a 1-4-1-4 academic calendar for first-year students, provides our students a more personalized academic experience to help them make the transition to our College. Autumn Term culminates with “”Into the Streets,”" an organized program of community service projects. During Winter Term, many of our first-year students enroll in a Leadership Development Practicum based on the highly successful management development models used in executive training programs, while many others enroll in a Service-Learning Practicum. These courses engage students in service programs in the local community so the students may apply their knowledge and bring back new knowledge into the classroom.

Early in our history, Eckerd College introduced the 4-1-4 calendar, and this model became widely adopted by other leading liberal arts colleges across the nation. The one-month Winter Term is designed to provide students with research, community service, independent study, and study abroad experiences. A hallmark of an Eckerd education is the mentoring relationship between a faculty member and a student, and the Winter Term especially provides an opportunity for an intense and highly reflective educational experience most often based on research and service efforts in domestic and international communities.

As co-chair of the Northwestern Community Development Corps, Roel Vivit decided not just to bring change through service, but to change service itself. In his view, the corps had focused on direct service without expanding its vision. Roel sought to focus service efforts so that they would achieve two goals: first, they would employ the particular strengths of university students, including computer, medical, and language skills; second, they would focus on effecting lasting change. The effort to transform the service corps culminated in a community health fair that was organized by the nursing school and a local hospital.

A partnership between Chicago State University and the local volunteer office of General Electric creates two layers of support for a local community-based organization. Volunteers come in pairs one student serves as an intern for the nonprofit and one GE employee serves as an advisor to the nonprofit. The GE volunteers also serve as mentors to the students during the internship. This organizational structure allows both parties to contribute their service. At the same time, it provides support for student volunteers that would usually need to be issued by the nonprofit itself.

The issue of selectivity mars many studies of service-learning students who engage in service, the argument goes, will already exhibit the dispositions and behaviors that service is expected to develop. In order to avoid this problem, Sharon Hamerich at Butler University split the students in her communications course into two groups: one group of students spent their lab hours in local community agencies, while the other stayed on campus. Each group was tested on such scales as self-certainty, self-perception, social self-esteem, and global self-esteem. Writing samples, word associations, and thought processes were analyzed. Service-learning participants showed greater improvements in all categories except global self-esteem.

Kathy Mendenhall, Speech Instructor, has guided the students in incorporating the skills of audience analysis, organization, research, and delivery. The students videotaped their presentations to use for reflection on the activity. The public speeches have given the students practical experience and knowledge beyond the classroom setting.
