A project at Colorado State University served a variety of audiences providing services for low-income families, and enlisting the help of juvenile offenders who gained a sense of usefulness and self-esteem by helping to provide a service for others. Julie Sieving, a mechanical engineering student designed a domestic solar water heating system which could be easily manufactured and sold for a low price to low-income families. The second side of the service effort arose when it came time to manufacture the water heaters. Youth in the juvenile branch of Larimer County Community Corrections built and assembled the heaters, taking pride in the fact that their work would benefit others in the community.

Art professor Doug Hanson has fifteen years of experience using art therapy to work with incarcerated individuals. In the spring of 1998 in a course on drawing and ceramics, Professor Hanson and seventeen students worked with selected prisoners from the Anamosa State Prison on an art project which connected both communities. Students and prisoners designed and fired ceramic tiles which would later be used to create two large-scale murals at the prison and at the college. Emphasizing the cooperative theme of the project, half of the students work was used in the mural at the prison, and half of the prisoners work was used in the mural at the college.

Dr. Bill Palmer, a professor of English at Alma College, incorporated service-learning into an Advanced Rhetoric course by providing writing workshops for inmates at a local prison. The course, offered during Alma s one-month spring term, started with an orientation at the prison, where students had the chance to first encounter inmates and decide if they would take part in the service-learning project. Students worked in pairs conducting writing workshops with 4-5 inmates each. At the end of the course, the prison sponsored an essay contest in which inmates got to put their writing skills to the test.

University of Richmond students conducted a participatory action research project with juvenile offenders and others involved in the Juvenile and Family Court system. The goal of the project was to identify gaps in court services, the unaddressed needs of at-risk youth and families for court intervention, and opportunities for philanthropic agencies to fill in the gap. The students shared a story with the detained juveniles and asked them to complete the picture of the protagonists, two young adults who committed crimes based on extenuating circumstances. The interviews with juveniles supported generalizations agencies have made about at-risk youth and their perspective on the world.
