At Stanford University, a select group of honors students are chosen to be Public Service Scholars in their junior year. These students spend a three-week immersion in the community and meet weekly in a service-learning seminar in the urban studies department. They also incorporate community-based learning and action research into their thesis, which they work on with two advisors, one from the Stanford faculty and one from the community.

The College Park Scholars program, a thematically based, two-year program for academically talented students, engages its students in both curricular and co-curricular service. All 12 of its academic programs incorporate service-learning in some form. For example, the Advocates for Children program brings children from Paint Branch Elementary School to campus for tutoring once a week. The Media, Self and Society program is developing a video to educate children about homelessness. The video will be distributed by a national nonprofit organization. This year, the College Park Scholars annual Service Day involved more than 900 students in service in the City of College Park and surrounding areas.

The Leadership Academy at Lansing Community College uses service-learning to help students develop the skills to become leaders in their community. Every fall, 15 students are selected to be part of a two-year series of four classes designed to teach skills such as leadership, event planning, and program evaluation. Service-learning is incorporated throughout the program, providing students with ways to connect their lessons in leadership to meaningful work in the community. At the end of the program, every member of the academy is required to do a final leadership project in the community.

We offer an honor stole. Over the past two years, the student must complete 75 hours of service and attend 6 (of 15) leadership workshops over the course of an academic year. Now they must have participated and completed the requirements twice (two academic years) to receive the stole. We have documentation forms for each student to complete and have signed by a service agency rep. We will probably increase the number of hours.

Columbus State Community College is proud to have encouraged good citizenship practices by providing students with opportunities to make a difference in our community. This can particularly be seen with our student group Phi Theta Kappa and with many other groups on campus.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is an honors organization where students of exceptional academic ability can actively contribute to positive social change. Columbus State sits in a low-income community where our resources are vitally needed. PTK has recognized this challenge by working with a public school in our area. In partnership with teachers and administrators, student needs were assessed. The result of this assessment has been a three-year tutoring program with disadvantaged students. PTK has also adopted a nursing home during the Christmas season to provide outreach to our citizens who are so often forgotten in these institutions. Our PTK students have also excelled in organizing drives for school supplies for homeless children in a nearby shelter–Faith Mission. They have also collaborated with our In-Service and Community Service Committees in collecting donations of toiletries and bedding for another shelter, Friends of the Homeless. In addition, PTK has adopted an AIDS camp and organized fund-raisers for this group.

There are even more good citizenship practices here at Columbus State. We have a recently organized a community service fraternal organization, Alpha Phi Omega, that is beginning to make its presence known on campus. Additionally, across campus, students have worked with faculty on service-learning projects. Some of their work has taken them into homeless shelters throughout the city to collect scientific data on the experiences and needs of our homeless citizens, We also have various activities spearheaded by our employees such as the Financial Aid Department s autumn 1998 book drive and the Multicultural Office s superb work with leading our campuswide participation in Operation Feed in Spring, 1999.

We are all too familiar with the problems that exist in our society. We can contribute to positive social change in a profusion of ways. To us, a good citizenship practice is one that enhances our community, our college, and ourselves.

Each year approximately 10 students graduate with that honor, of commitment to service– they sit up front (with other distinctive degree recipients) and wear special cords. The scholars are required to complete 10 credit hours of service- learning classes, 400 hours of service (documented and journaled to the s/l coordinator) and a final Integrative Service Project…The students document the placement and hours so that we can count them. More importantly, the students write their “”thoughts”" about their service: what they felt and thought, how it’s important, what’s frustrating, why it’s needed, etc. Their submissions are read and comments made, prompting them to ponder questions or relate an event. Important criteria for the final project (ISP) are as follows:

1) The student must consult with his or her faculty advisor, service-learning staff, and supervisory committee (most importantly a community partner) to plan the ISP.
2) The project must meet an identified need in the community and respond to the requests of those being served
3) The project should promote self- sufficiency from, as opposed to dependence upon, the service scholar
4) The student must be able to articulate how his/her project allows integration of knowledge with academic work
5) The project must be documented by a written summary (about 5 pages) that will be archived in the Nebbion Center and the Marriott Library.

Internship program: All Weekday and many Weekend students are required to perform one or two internships.? Each internship is linked with the student s major or support area of study. Students serve a wide variety of clients, including business, non-profit organizations, and health and social service agencies. Some internship sites have been: The Milwaukee Health Department, Wisconsin Electric Power Company, Madison Street Clinic, and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Courses: Many courses in a wide variety of disciplines require students to perform service in order to develop greater understanding of the subjects and their professional application. Some courses in which students provide service are: Marketing Research, Computerizing the Organization, and Advanced Nursing Theory and Practice.

Ethic of Service: Service is stressed in a variety of ways at Alverno. For example, service is one criterion used to identity students who graduate with honors. Also, student organizations and clubs are encouraged to include community service as part of their regular activities.
