In this required course for creative writing majors offered for the first time in the spring of 2003, students meet with their writing partners for a minimum of five visits (one hour each) to become acquainted and to eventually explore a significant moment or event in that person s life. This semester, students read The Soul of a Citizen, and the directors of involved agencies gave presentations on their respective agencies and client population. In February of this year, through funding by Lilly Endowment, Paul Loeb came to campus to give a lecture, conduct a faculty workshop, and visit the class. Students also read literature (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama) that focuses on some of the issues inherent in the particular situations of the chosen agencies. The cross-disciplinary aspect of the course touches upon psychology, history (of the city of Muncie and its relationship with the particular population engaged), sociology, social work, linguistics, women s issues, socio-political matters, etc. This course is designed for writers to practice the techniques of characterization, point-of-view, setting, & conflict so that in fiction or nonfiction, prose takes on new meaning, intensity, and originality in their rendering of their writing partner s story. Community-based education offers the opportunity for the students to share their skills as creative writers (as they hone the techniques) with citizens in the community. As the students develop as writers, they also develop a broader perspective of the complex ways through which individuals cope with their situations and environments. This semester, students are matched with writing partners from Hillcroft Services, Inc. (group home residents with mental challenges), Big Brothers Big Sisters (clients and volunteers) and Heritage Retirement Village (residents). The end product of the published collection of these works and the release reception for all involved in the effort will be the capstone of the course.

At CCSU, community involvement is present at all levels and structures of the university. CCSU has a long tradition of campus-community partnerships, which are an integral part of many courses.

Some majors have community-focused internships that are applicable to the students’ program of study. For students in teacher preparation programs, there are unique opportunities for placement in a network of professional development schools. Students in majors other than teacher preparation also complete internships that involve volunteer community service as part of their program preparation. Some of the academic programs that participate are: art, criminal justice/criminology, English, environmental science, geography, political science, social work, sociology, and theater. Recently, the Psychology Department added a requirement for their BA program for students to take two courses that focus on ethical issues and require participation in student and/or community organizations.

For our Spring semester, as their Senior thesis project, four actors put together a Children’s Theatre tour of folk and fairy tales that they wrote, produced, performed and toured to local area elementary schools which were very desperate for “”artful”" activities to supplement their curriculum. The performers then met the children after each performance and answered questions. These students worked for me at my professional summer theatre in Lincoln, New Hampshire where we tour Children’s Theatre throughout the state. ( <a href=""http://www.papermilltheatre.org/"" target=""_models"">http://www.papermilltheatre.org/ ) One of the students wrote the scripts and most of the music last summer for these original musicals which bring these fairy/folk tales to life!

We were fortunate to receive a Servant Leadership grant from LC so as to offer this service to the community free of charge. We are also entertaining the possibility in the near future of “”Classical Scenes in the Schools”" (similar to many professional outreach programs) where we would tour scenes from classics to teens and have a follow up Q and A on issues and impressions.

Thanks to a group of enthusiastic team workers our community as a whole will be greatly enriched. Owing to a combined effort of our local Arts Guild, Construction students, who were responsible for designing and building a brand new performance-art interior for our local movie theater and a 6th Period Drama class, our community now has a top notch, state of the art theatre that the entire community and county can take pride in. The students profit greatly from the experience because it provides a setting (The Magnolia Theatre) that inspires them more so than a normal classroom environment. They are taught the history of the theater, all aspects of stagecraft (including lighting and sound), and lastly they are given the opportunity to improvise and perform. They spend a total of 180 hours in this “”classroom”". Not only do the students attend classes in the theater they are also custodians, who maintain and cleanup the facility for various performances. They operate the sound and lighting equipment and act as House Manager and staff for school-related performances. All the students find the experience to be greatly rewarding.

Art professor Doug Hanson has fifteen years of experience using art therapy to work with incarcerated individuals. In the spring of 1998 in a course on drawing and ceramics, Professor Hanson and seventeen students worked with selected prisoners from the Anamosa State Prison on an art project which connected both communities. Students and prisoners designed and fired ceramic tiles which would later be used to create two large-scale murals at the prison and at the college. Emphasizing the cooperative theme of the project, half of the students work was used in the mural at the prison, and half of the prisoners work was used in the mural at the college.

When Professor Ursula McCarty wanted to help students in her course on Feminist Art see the dramatic effect art can have even in the simplest of settings, she introduced them to a new group of art patrons: a class of pre-schoolers. Professor McCarty brought her students to a local community center where children in the local HeadStart program had an empty wall just outside their classroom that they wanted filled. The students met with the preschoolers to discuss their ideas for the ten-foot mural. Once the group settled on a design from airports to dinosaurs the work began. Students visited the classroom regularly, interacting with the children as they designed the mural and painted it over the course of several weeks.

In the spring of 1997, an Introduction to Ceramics class, taught by Lisa Lynes at North Idaho College, enlisted students as tutors in a local program called Art on the Edge. Through the program students in the class worked in an after-school setting with children living in the local St. Vincent DePaul Homeless Shelter. Students helped the children create original ceramic projects which were later fired by the arts department at the college. Several students commented that it was an eye-opening experience to work so closely with children who were living under such harsh conditions.

Selected students from Moline High School and United Township High School, were given a special performance the BHC-HEDDA GABLER production, involved in lunch and a lunch-time discussion of the play, then they were involved in conflict-resolution workshops over a one-week period, using the play as spring-board for exercises and discussions. Extensive surveys were conducted with all participants (including Service-Learning students from BHC) to measure the value of the play and workshops, and the high school students have each sent Appraisal Letters, applying criteria that was taught in the workshops. The number of Selected Students from those two high schools was 120 total.

This fall, in Principles of Drama Therapy, Professor Sally Bailey has linked Kansas State University students with seniors at a local retirement community to start a seniors theatre group. The team is creating an autobiographical original play/video production to enhance the social relatedness, sensory awareness, verbal skills, and creativity of the seniors. The students get to apply their skills learned in class and gain a first-hand taste of the joys and frustrations of leading a drama therapy group.

In the Fall 2000 semester, three senior level design studios at Kansas State University, including architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture, are collaborating to assist Downtown Topeka Inc. by developing proposals to explore the formal implications of the newly established Downtown Topeka Design Plan . In this service-learning project, the students gain essential skills in leadership, problem solving, and teamwork, become better acquainted with political realities within a community, and become better prepared to work in the field of their chosen profession. The City of Topeka will be able to test the students design concepts for possible implementation in the community.

MassArt offers a class which engages students across all majors in service learning. Called “”Art and Community,”" students develop individual projects based on community needs and their own artistic goals, and implement them over a ten week period. Now in its third year, projects have included a glass major working with urban teens to create glass tiles for their youth center, a painting major teaching drawing classes to female prison inmates, and an art history major bringing children from public housing on weekly visits to art museums. Other service learning classes include a graphic design class working with a community based youth agency to create brochures and posters, an illustration class creating illustrations, which will be used in a calendar to raise money for the neighborhood, and a wood sculpture class building a twelve-foot gazebo for a homeless shelter. A freshman class on Color Theory also worked with a homeless shelter for residents with mental illness, and created a mural utilizing their knowledge. In all of these cases, students were inspired to continue their involvement with the community in greater depth once the classes were over.

At the Massachusetts College of Art, a course entitled Art and Community Service emphasizes the artist s role as an active citizen by finding socially meaningful outlets for students creativity. In addition to readings and frequent journal writings, students in the class are required to develop an art-related community service project. In the past, students in the class have helped design brochures for local nonprofits, painted murals for local schools, and visited hospitals to provide art therapy for patients.

Throughout the year, students are provided with opportunities to utilize their talents in ways that enrich the community as well as increase their understanding of what the community has to offer. Imagination, creativity, and vision in the civic arena are all nurtured through a variety of programs integrated into the curriculum through service learning, as well as through co-curricular programs. Faculty members interest in service learning has increased greatly over the past few years, and participation in <a href=""http://db.compact.org/program-models/FMPro?-db=programmodels_web.fp5&-format=pm-search-detail.html&Serial==636&-Find"">communityARTworks during Orientation stimulates that interest both for faculty and students. Service learning has been utilized in a range of disciplines.

This past semester, a course, called “”Navajo of the Southwest,”" was jointly developed by a professor of Anthropology and the Associate Dean of Students. Students studied the art and culture of the Navajo, as well as the history and the current social, political and economic issues. As a part of the curriculum, the class traveled to New Mexico for an Alternative Spring Break, working with Navajo children on the reservation to create a collaborative mural. Before leaving for New Mexico, students also learned about issues of diversity and culture while engaged in service, basic group process theory, and tools for successful collaboration. Over seventy students applied for the fifteen spaces available in this class, which was an overwhelming success. Through relationships developed with Navajo while in New Mexico, students became aware of the issues surrounding uranium mining on the reservation, and continue to be activists in working to gain compensation for Navajo who contracted cancer as a result of their work in the mines.

Communities can become closer when they have a place to gather and celebrate their accomplishments. Through art and stories, students, faculty, and alumni from the Massachusetts College of Art began an ambitious project to transform local museums and community centers in Boston into public spaces that celebrate the dedication of Bostonians to their community. One hundred students, faculty, and alumni were paired with Boston community leaders, one born in each year from 1900 to 1999. Community leaders, chosen on the basis of the contributions they have made and the obstacles they have overcome, were interviewed and had their portraits painted by their college partners. The portraits and interviews were then showcased around Boston.

“”Kids Plus,”" which is funded by the National Corporation for Public Service and by Bates, with support from area agencies, strives to raise community aspirations and learning while engaging Bates College students, faculty and staff in meaningful service-learning projects. It focuses on the Longley School and the Lewiston Multi Purpose Center neighborhoods and acts as a vehicle to encourage service providers and residents to identify community needs and access the resources to meet those needs. The intent of “”Kids Plus”" is to assure that in-school efforts assist in implementing Maine Learning Results and that out-of-school efforts address the community’s request for high quality activities for all ages. Work focuses on student learning, arts programming, resident support and community building.

Some examples of activities that have been a part of “”Kids Plus”" include:

Teachers from Longley, Martel and McMahon worked collaboratively with Bates faculty and students to publish a curriculum document aligning Maine Learning Results with current science curricula.
The theater production “”The Great Shoe Strike”" based on a real incident in the city of Lewiston’s history was produced by the Great Escape Theater. Over 200 public school students and community members attended. The Great Escape Theater was a project of the Bates Theater Department course “”Creating Community Theater.”" It was done in collaboration with the local arts agency, L/A Arts, and leveraged funds from the Davis Family Foundation and the Simmons Foundation.
Nearly 50 Bates students were mentors to Longley School 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The program included school visits and events held on campus for the younger students. On the average, each mentor spent 35 hours with his/her mentee. In addition, a senior psychology major designed a program evaluation format for her senior thesis.
Two Bates students and 2 Longley parents began and led a Girl Scout troop for downtown girls. The demand was so high that next year this effort will double.
Nearly 500 hours of quality after-school activities were provided children in the after-school program at the Multi-Purpose Center in Lewiston. Service-learning students, work-study students, and volunteers supported this effort.
A pre-orientation service project for first-year students was planned with Longley School parents.
Thirty-seven people, representing 13 families, participated in a 12-week “”Nurturing”" program designed to build communication and conflict resolution skills within the family. This project was funded jointly by the College and the Sisters of Charity Health System and used work-study students as support staff.
Students from the Education Department’s “”Perspectives in Education”" worked in the classrooms of Longley.
Education faculty, a first grade teacher, and an independent-study student work collaboratively during Short Term to design a model classroom experience. This will be used in the future to provide prospective secondary education majors with a background in literacy acquisition.
Anti-smoking groups were organized by psychology students during Short Term for Longley School children.
Bates faculty and students hosted a science day on campus for all Longley 5th and 6th graders. The event was organized by a Women’s Studies major who had received national funding to implement the project.

A version of Performance and Social Change and Community-based theater is taught to a class of 15 graduate and undergraduate students who spend 20-30 hours working with (somewhat vaguely defined) community-based theater groups. These include a program using theater to teach literacy in elementary schools, a theater company for highschool kids on the north side of Minneapolis, a few interactive theater companies, and a Latina women’s group celebrating La Posada.

A lot of time is spent in the classroom asking questions about cultural colonization, social agency, and the responsibility of the artist/community to engage in mutual exchange. Also questioned is the notion of ‘community’ as a positive, homogenous entity, examining the boundaries of ‘community,’ their fluidity/stability, and various ways of addressing the inclusion/exclusion paradigm that often defines community.

The class is a combination of history/theory and practice, looking at the pageantry movement of the early 20th century, Little Theaters, grassroots theaters, separatist political movements identified with theater (such as the Black Arts Movement, El Teatro Campesino), Cornerstone Theater, and contemporary grassroots movements. Boal techniques, guests from Yugoslavia using the work of Grotowski and Barba, and some sociodrama are introduced to the classroom.

Karen Kaufman, a UM visiting dance instructor, developed a program at UM s Department of Drama/Dance that introduces university students to teaching creative movement to diverse populations. The program focuses on having college students teach dance and creative movement to people with disabilities. The program also takes student instructors out to the public schools to provide dance instruction to children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in dance classes. The program provides an opportunity for college student dance teachers to examine the ways in which creative movement can be utilized to enhance the lives of diverse populations of people.

The Piedmont High School service learning project is called “”Very Special Arts.”" It utilizes the power of the arts to reach every child and adult with a disability through a cooperative effort involving high school art students and partners within the community. Students in the art curriculum receive disability training through guest speakers, videos, and class projects. Students in the National Art Honor Society work one on one with individuals with disabilities on field trips, and then report back to their classmates on their experiences. A countywide festival is planned round a children’s story book author and each art activity is related to one of the author’s books. On this day, participants have the opportunity to celebrate and share accomplishments in the arts. Many businesses and members of the community attend to make this day a true celebration.
