The Norwich Service-Learning Scholars, comprised of a team of students, are committed to amplifying and promoting student voice in the integration of community needs and university curriculum.

The Scholars undergo a competitive selection process and, once selected, are under contract for one year. They speak with profesors, students, and student groups, they promote service-learning through campus media, flyers, advertisements, and the SL newsletter, and they represent service-learning students on the Service-Learning Initiatives Committee.

They receive an intensive one-day training in service-learning, meet bi-monthly as a team, work office hours in the Service-Learning Program, and arrange for guest speakers on campus for their own professional development as well as that of other students. They also speak with campuses and groups interested in service-learning and their program, such as at the Vermont Campus Compact Student Leadership Conference. There they presented a workshop on “”Student Leadership in Service-Learning.”"

Jennifer Duncan, a student at Mesa Community College, seeks to redefine the role of the journalist as a civic journalist, one whose job it is not just to write about what happens in the community, but to raise public awareness and help the community solve problems. To date, Jennifer has founded two publications in Mesa, Arizona. Both publications are street newspapers newspapers written and distributed by homeless people. In this way, Jennifer helps raise awareness about the problem of homelessness, while providing the opportunity for public expression and job training for those who work on the paper.

The Social Responsibilities of Leadership Seminar was developed by the GWCC Service-Learning Committee as a vehicle to foster leadership in our students. The Committee is made up of at least one faculty member from each instructional division and co-chaired by a faculty member and the Director of Community Partnership Programs and is charged with overseeing service-learning projects and activities on our campus. The seminar, which is conducted each spring semester, is an all campus event. Faculty are asked to nominate students from their divisions. Students, usually 50-60 in number, are then invited to participate in a one-day seminar focusing on the characteristics and types of leadership, the responsibilities of leadership, and the ethics of leadership as related to citizenship. As a follow-up activity, participating students (with guidance from their nominating faculty) develop and carry out a service-learning project. Ideally, they will recruit additional students from their discipline to join them in the activity. Students are permitted to expand an already existing service-learning activity. Students must also participate in at least one interdisciplinary reflection session.

One of several priorities identified in the University s 1997-1998 Shared Vision process, initiated by President Stephen Weber, was the establishment of The Center for Community-Based Service Learning (CCBSL). The mission of the CCBSL is to enhance learning and civic responsibility through community engagement. We believe that community-based service learning provides structured opportunities for students to learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized involvement that: 1) is conducted in the community and meets mutually identified needs; 2) is integrated into and enhances the academic experience of students by relating academic content to community issues; 3) fosters civic responsibility; 4) integrates reflection on the interrelationships between course content and community-based learning activities. Since the fall of 1998, the Center has developed partnerships among students, community partners, and faculty. The CCBSL provides a database of 144 community partners that meet student volunteer or service needs, a bank of community projects suitable for faculty to include within their courses, information on relevant grant opportunities, reference resources for research and course design, and a referral system to other campus resources. The Center promotes civic education and the ethic of giving back to the community by: assisting faculty who wish to develop and enhance classes that integrate academic study with community service, working with student organizations on community efforts, and providing information on volunteer opportunities for students. Two advisory boards review policies and support the CCBSL and programs. They assist in communicating the goals of the Center to the campus community and voice faculty and students concerns surrounding community service learning. Associated Students, a member of Campus Outreach Opportunities League, played a key role in the development of the CCBSL. In addition, they oversee the CCBSL Student Advisory Board.

Based on the needs of the campus and our surrounding communities, the CCBSL has amplified the role of students as contributors to the development of community-based service learning at SDSU and the development of strong community partnerships with agencies where we can place students in regular, on-going service. To provide the support and expansion, we created the Community Advocacy Program (CAP) which trains student leaders to act as responsible citizens in response to needs identified within the San Diego and Southern California region. Each CAP Leader is a volunteer coordinator with a partner agency and SDSU course or package of courses and oversees the placement of student volunteers in the community. During their year-long commitment, 12 CAP leaders play the role of a community service facilitator. Each CAP leader organizes community service projects for classes, meets with community partners to establish a feasible and worthwhile service routine, and guides fellow students though community service projects. These students participate in a year-long service-learning course that addresses the topics of service-learning, diversity, community issues, civic responsibility, and leadership.

SDSU Service Learning home: <a href=""http://servicelearning.sdsu.edu/"" target=""_models"">http://servicelearning.sdsu.edu/
E-mail: <a href=""mailto:%73%65%72%76%69%63%65%6C%65%61%72%6E%69%6E%67%40%73%64%73%75%2E%65%64%75"">servicelearning {at} sdsu(.)edu

Students enrolled in Introductory Accounting at California State University, Chico, quickly learn that good business is about more than just good business skills. Professor Curtis DeBerg focuses on developing students leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, and uses service-learning to do the job. Students are given the extra credit option of spending one to two hours a week teaching business and computer literacy skills to at-risk youth. In this way, the course shows students the potential for business to have a meaningful impact on people s lives, at the same time as it teaches human skills often overlooked in business disciplines.

Every September, as a part of the College s new student orientation program, the entire freshman class, new transfer students, student orientation sponsors, resident assistants, student career consultants, student community service coordinators, and student academic liaisons participate in a volunteer program.

The project students undertake, and the logistical support required for the project are determined during the summer months by the Director of Internships and Volunteer Programs. Projects in recent years have included: fence painting and spreading sand (seven tons!) throughout the playground of a local pre-school; cleaning up the local Little League field; landscaping the grounds and interior painting of the Crippled Children s Society; and landscaping the grounds of a local public school.

The Director has attempted to select projects which: provide new students with an opportunity to see they can make a tangible difference; provide students with a common bonding experience; and serve as vehicles to let students know about other “”helping”" opportunities in which they might involve themselves during their time at the College. Most importantly, the project – an outreach effort – serves to establish relationships with the local community.

The New Student Community Service project was initiated six years ago when student government agreed to give up a portion of the orientation program dedicated to social programming. Students were initially reticent about relinquishing that time. However, after the first entering class successfully completed their project they challenged each succeeding class to do a bigger or better job and the project took on a life of its own.

The Conference helps students recognize that they have, can, and should exercise responsibility for themselves and for others. The programming has included workshops and sessions, which address topics such as: ethics, establishing and managing priorities, self-assessments, community service and volunteerism; and diversity. The Conference has been a very useful tool for helping students learn how to help themselves, learn to respect the rights and opinions of others, and learn that to make a difference they must be proactive.

The Service-Learning Program at CU-Boulder is both well established and growing. We offer an exciting array of courses that present students with diverse service-learning opportunities. Currently, over 35 faculty and 1000 students participate in service-learning annually, partnering with hundreds of community organizations and each semester, more faculty in more disciplines join us. We are especially proud of the internet writing center we helped to create and support. It connects high school students to business and University commentators to help them gain perspective on their writing skills and to allow CU students to share their growing knowledge about writing efficacy with high school student writers.

At many colleges and universities, student service has a history of coming from outside the academy. In New Haven, Connecticut, Dwight Hall serves as an independent community service center for Yale University students. Located on campus but not technically accountable to the university, the service center epitomizes the high degree of student leadership that is necessary for successful co-curricular service-learning. The students who run the center are motivated by their responsibility to maintain longstanding relationships with New Haven agencies. Students develop proposals and include plans for how the program will continue after they graduate. Learning and reflection regularly take place through student publications and forums sponsored by the Center.

Our educational model for our first-year students is unique. Our Autumn (August) Term, resulting in a 1-4-1-4 academic calendar for first-year students, provides our students a more personalized academic experience to help them make the transition to our College. Autumn Term culminates with “”Into the Streets,”" an organized program of community service projects. During Winter Term, many of our first-year students enroll in a Leadership Development Practicum based on the highly successful management development models used in executive training programs, while many others enroll in a Service-Learning Practicum. These courses engage students in service programs in the local community so the students may apply their knowledge and bring back new knowledge into the classroom.

The Georgia Education Mentoring Program (GEM) is a partnership between GC&SU and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. This pilot project funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, pairs outstanding GC&SU students with community and professional leaders across the state. Through shadowing visits, and structured communication and reflection, the students identify the characteristics of leadership most effective in an ever-changing world. This opportunity to connect academic knowledge with the professional world at a high level enhances our commitment to provide communities and employers with graduates who exhibit professionalism, responsibility, service, leadership, and integrity.
