Indicators of Engagement Project Summary
EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ACTIVE CITIZENS
A Strategy for Deepening Civic Engagement in American Higher Education
Campus Compact has received a three-year grant from the Carnegie Corporation to combine documentation and dissemination of best practices of the engaged campus with an organizing effort to help campuses achieve broader institutionalization of civic engagement.
The focus: Campuses are hungry for good information about how to achieve an engaged campus. Campuses need a series of exemplars that they can use to create civic engagement strategies appropriate to their particular type of institution and specific needs. Campus Compact will research community colleges in year one (May 2002-May 2003), minority-serving institutions in year two, and comprehensive universities in year three.
The major activities of this project include:
Visiting colleges to identify, document and disseminate best practices of civic engagement that demonstrate successful strategies for that particular type of institution
Publishing a monograph of models of engagement for community colleges, minority serving institutions, and all of higher education
This research will be based on the thirteen revised Indicators of Engagement*:
Mission and Purpose
Academic and Administrative Leadership
Disciplines, Departments, and Interdisciplinary work
Teaching and Learning
Faculty Development
Faculty Roles and Rewards
Support Structures and Resources
Internal Budget & Resource Allocations
Community Voice
External Resource Allocation
Coordination of Community-Based Activities
Forums for Fostering Public Dialogue
Student Voice
