College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Leader Position Description

Minnesota Campus Compact (MNCC) leverages the collective assets of our higher education institutions in partnerships with our communities to expand civic engagement across Minnesota. More than 50 member college and university campuses are committed to promoting and supporting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education, in order to educate college students to become active citizens who are well-equipped to develop creative solutions to society’s most pressing issues.

The VISTA Leader’s primary responsibility will be to support the work of 9 VISTAs at various college campuses throughout Minnesota working to create greater healthcare access and health literacy for primarily low-income populations.

Duties include:

  • Providing technical assistance and resources about healthcare, VISTA, and service-learning to the VISTA members
  • Organizing and leading training events
  • Conducting site visits
  • Taking care of logistical concerns for VISTAs, such as reviewing quarterly progress reports, MNCC training reimbursements, etc.
  • Communicating with VISTAs regularly to determine their progress and providing support as needed
  • Assisting with the recruitment, selection, and early service training of VISTAs for the 2009-2010 school year
  • The VISTA Leader will also be involved in the work of Minnesota Campus Compact to promote and support campus-community partnerships throughout the state of Minnesota.

Outcomes:

  • Support VISTA members in developing three or more new or expanded partnerships or projects
  • Increase health care access for individuals from low-income communities throughout Minnesota

Allocation of time:

  • 80% in office
  • 20% in the community

Benefits:

  • Living allowance of approximately $1,000 a month
  • Education Award of $4,725 or End-of-Service Award of $1,200 upon completion of full term of service

Qualifications:

  • College degree
  • Successful completion of a year of VISTA
  • Strong interest and experience in campus-community partnerships
  • Strong interest and experience in healthcare
  • Knowledge of healthcare systems or other healthcare efforts
  • Strong organizational skills, including training, project management, event planning, and implementation
  • Supervisory experience
  • Commitment to serving as a VISTA Leader for one full year, starting September 15th, 2009 to September 14th, 2010.
