Maine Campus Compact VISTA Leader

Come to Maine and experience the natural beauty and exciting outdoor opportunities provided by its distinct four seasons!  Maine Campus Compact (MCC) is a statewide coalition of colleges and universities whose purpose is to further the public purposes and civic mission of higher education.  The VISTA Leader will support a statewide team of 8 AmeriCorps*VISTAs who work closely with faculty, staff, community partners, and local schools to develop programming which mobilizes college students to improve college aspirations for low income K-12 youth.  The Leader will become part of an enthusiastic team, consisting of the MCC Executive Director and Program Manager.  Our office is located on the beautiful Bates College campus, just 45 minutes north of bustling Portland.  An ideal VISTA Leader has strong leadership experience, takes initiative, is organized, innovative, patient, skilled at problem-solving, comfortable and skilled with office computer software, and preferably experienced in event planning.  Applicants MUST have successfully completed one term as a VISTA member prior to starting the position.  Please follow the application instructions posted at http://www.mainecompact.org/vista-join.php.

MCC’s VISTA Leader will:

  • Be a source of positive energy, motivation, and support for the statewide VISTA team.
  • Connect the team to resources and best practices on a variety of topics (college access, mentoring, program development, working in higher education, etc.)
  • Maintain regular and creative communications with VISTA members to track progress, recognize accomplishments, and provide support and feedback.
  • Planning and conduct with Program Manager twice-yearly site visits to the 8 participating college campuses
  • Develop and organize in-person team-building and training events, held every six weeks
  • Coordinate the recruiting and interviewing of potential members for the 2013-14 MCC VISTA team.
  • Act as a spokesperson for MCC, and be knowledgeable about our other programs and services
  • Coordinate our 12th Annual Awards Program
  • Facilitate opportunities for collaboration with other AmeriCorps and VISTA programs in Maine and New England

Essential functions and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
  • Community service experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • Motivated, independent worker
  • Valid driver’s license and car

Desired functions and qualifications:

  • Experience in college aspirations/access
  • Comfortable public speaking
  • Event planning and program management
  • Volunteer management experience

Benefits and terms:
MCC’s VISTA Leader will receive a stipend of roughly $13,632 over the course of the year. We are also pleased to offer a generous housing subsidy!  Upon successful completion, choose either an education award of $5,550 to use toward educational loans or future educational expenses or a stipend of $1,500.  The VISTA Leader may put any qualifying loans in forbearance during the term of service; any accrued interest will be paid off by AmeriCorps at the end of the term. Health insurance and workers’ compensation are provided at no extra cost, and there are numerous professional development opportunities.  Term of service for MCC’s VISTA Leader is August 2012 to August 2013 (exact dates TBD).
