Massachusetts Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTAs

Massachusetts Campus Compact (MACC) is a nonprofit coalition of 70 college and university presidents committed to developing the civic skills of students, building partnerships with the community and integrating civic engagement with teaching and research. Massachusetts Campus Compact’s work encompasses a broad range of activities designed to increase the effectiveness of those working to make higher education institutions vital agents of civic renewal. The MACC AmeriCorps VISTA program was developed in response to the needs of MACC member campuses and in recognition of the potential for institutions of higher education to more responsibly address the local needs of low-income communities, and be responsible mechanisms for community change. Through their unique community and campus based placements, MACC AmeriCorps VISTA members build, support, and deepen partnerships between MACC member institutions and local organizations in two areas: 1) education and 2) economic opportunity. These partnerships will strengthen the capacity of local organizations to alleviate poverty in low-income communities by leveraging the resources of higher education institutions. The MACC AmeriCorps VISTA program provides colleges, universities and the community-based organizations they work with the opportunity to explore possibilities for collaboration, impact, and long-term change.

Member Duties : Members focus on two goals: 1) Partnerships for Education: Members work to develop, build, support and deepen campus-community partnerships that focus on the success and year to year persistence of students at every level of the pre-K-16 spectrum. As a president, my engagement with the community demonstrates leadership by example. Moreover, it gives our students an opportunity to experience the 'real world.' Campus Compact is the foundation and center of this engagement process. It is the organization from which we seek guidance and collaboration."
