Michigan Campus Compact Summer Associates is an eight-week program. Summer Associates will begin their term of service on Friday, June 15, 2012 and end on August 3, 2012. Program goals: Summer Associates will utilize skills as College Positive Volunteers (CPVs) as a means of promoting educational attainment in K-12 youth. Summer Associates will engage in educational programming that serves to prevent summer learning loss. Summer Associates will develop campus-community partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and youth serving organizations to enhance conditions that improve learning. Possible Projects for the AmeriCorps*VISTA Summer Associates: Utilize first-generation college students to mentor underserved/at risk youth, promoting educational attainment. Partner with a local library to expand existing summer literacy programs. Partner with existing mentorship programs to develop an educational component. Use skilled college volunteers to establish an agricultural education program at a community garden. Help coordinate and serve with an existing summer tutoring program. The Summer Associates role will be to augment existing work with systems and knowledge to increase its effectiveness, to empower college students and campuses to utilize their allocated and sizable resources to better meet the needs of those living in poverty. Service initiatives on campuses will continue, and Michigan Campus Compact Summer Associates will increase its effectiveness and relevancy to meet true community needs surrounding the issues critical to our nation and state: poverty and educational attainment for at risk youth.
