Michigan Nonprofit Association AmeriCorps*VISTAs

Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) Civic Engagement AmeriCorps*VISTA members will be placed with K-12 schools, college campuses, or volunteer centers, but will serve at least half of their service hours off site with a community partner. MNA*VISTAS will promote and strengthen community-building initiatives focused on education and economic opportunity. Members will serve in one or more of the following five capacities: 1) Engage in activities intended to improve learning and success in low-achieving schools. 2) Engage in high quality service and service-learning projects in low-achieving schools. 3) Engage in counseling, academic, enrollment, and retention support activities for economically disadvantaged students. 4) Engage in activities that provide, support and/or facilitate access to resources and services that improve financial literacy, stability and security. 5) Engage in activities that provide, support and/or facilitate access to workforce development resources and services intended to improve employability and, ultimately, lead to employment.

Member Duties : Develop partnerships to enhance classroom learning. Provide professional development for teachers. Provide student leadership and community engagement training. Connect volunteers and nonprofits with K-12 students to develop and implement service-learning projects. Train volunteers, teachers and students in the College Positive Volunteerism (CPV) curriculum. Connect CPVs with pre-college programs. Build awareness about college access and success through events, programs and social media. Deliver workshops related to financial literacy, tax preparation, consumer counseling, and connections to community resources, services and benefits. Connect low-income populations to educational and training opportunities that will increase employability skills. Assist low-income populations in finding a quality volunteer placement that will increase employability skills. Create sustainable programming and partnerships. Educate others about community needs and poverty-related issues.
