Michigan Nonprofit Association Civic Engagement AmeriCorps*VISTA

Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) is a statewide nonprofit organization that serves its nonprofit members to advance their missions. MNA’s vision is that Michigan’s nonprofit sector be a vital leader in building and sustaining thriving communities, and MNA believes that active, engaged volunteers are imperative. MNA’s Civic Engagement team made up of The LEAGUE Michigan, Michigan Campus Compact, and Volunteer Centers of Michigan expands efforts to reach across all areas of lifelong engagement through the organization. To this end, 28 MNA AmeriCorps*VISTAs are placed with K-12 schools, college campuses, and volunteer centers, and they serve at least half of their service hours with a community partner.

AmeriCorps*VISTA members focus on building sustainable programs. They strengthen and support organizations by building infrastructure, expanding community partnerships, and securing long-term resources rather than through the provision of direct services.

MNA*VISTAs serve in one or more of the following capacities:
1) Engage in activities intended to improve learning and success in low-achieving schools.
2) Engage in high quality service and service-learning projects in low-achieving schools.
3) Engage in counseling, academic, enrollment, and retention support activities for economically disadvantaged students.
4) Engage in activities that provide, support and/or facilitate access to resources and services that improve financial literacy, stability and security.
5) Engage in activities that provide, support and/or facilitate access to workforce development resources and services intended to improve employability and, ultimately, lead to employment.

MNA AmeriCorps*VISTA positions will begin in July or August and run for one calendar year, with the opportunity to re-sign. 26 positions are available in various locations around Michigan.

The experience of interacting with some of the [homeless] people on the streets was an eye-opener. You leave those types of experiences with a mix of emotions--hope, disgust, love, grief--but I always leave motivated to do more."
