Vermont Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTAs

Vermont Campus Compact has three recently created VISTA opportunities that are available. We are looking to fill these positions very quickly! If you are interested please email Robyn at rbaylor {at} smcvt(.)edu.

Vermont Campus Compact is looking for people to fight poverty as organizers, collaborators, and catalysts for change as AmeriCorps*VISTA members. Each member will serve one year at a participating college or community organization, mobilizing the resources of higher education to serve the needs of the community and effect sustainable change. Working with students, faculty, administration, and local communities and schools, VISTA members will build volunteer capacity and develop programs directed at pulling people out of poverty. The 2012-2013 VISTA program goals are focused on education; all VCC VISTAs will develop programming on campuses and in the community focused on improving college aspirations for K-12 students, with a particular focus area on individuals from low-income populations. The goal of these programs and activities is to increase the belief that college is an option and increase access to higher education.

Benefits Include:
In addition to extensive professional development training, members receive a living stipend, health benefits, and can elect to receive an educational award to pay off existing student loans or finance future education.

A car and valid driver’s license is required for this position.

Positions will begin August 10, 2012.

Boys and Girls Club Alliance Coordinator, Rutland, VT
The Boys and Girls Club State Alliance Coordinator will work to increase effectiveness and efficiency at the six clubs throughout the state. By helping all of the clubs to collaborate they will be able to better achieve their mission to inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The VISTA will help organize, facilitate and follow up on quarterly meetings for the Vermont Boys & Girls Club Alliance, research and write grants that will expand opportunities to serve the state, and create and distribute marketing materials for both print and online distribution. The VISTA will also work to create stronger partnerships with colleges throughout the state to better engage college students as volunteers and enable volunteers to encourage college aspirations in their mentees. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and dynamic individual. A sense of humor is a must as you will be joining a young, dedicated team that is dedicated to serving low-income youth.

Lyndon State College Upward Bound, Lyndonville, VT
At the Lyndon State College Upward Bound program the full time VISTA member will provide support services to Lyndon State College Upward Bound students and the full time staff. These services will provide a blueprint for high school academic advising, college access and college success activities for target school coordinators at our 9 cooperating high schools. The focus of the VISTA member will be to provide support to increase students’ aspirations, facilitate post secondary academic preparation, as well as provide support for transition into a post secondary environment and overall success in college from matriculation to graduation. Additionally, the VISTA member will coordinate volunteer community service opportunities throughout the year, and career exploration work study positions for each student during the summer program. The background preparation for the advising program and the community service portion of Upward Bound will be the VISTA member’s primary focus. The VISTA member will become the “Go To” person for coordinating services to meet the needs of our low income students. This position will include all of the necessary training to ensure continued success for our students long term and short term goals.

SIT Graduate Institute, Brattleboro, VT
This position will help tap into the talents, expertise, and passions of graduate students at SIT to support local initiatives that keep young people in Southern Vermont in high school and prepare them to attend college. The VISTA volunteer will help us construct a bridge between the campus and community in ways that will engage a generation of students. The VISTA will work with the SIT Graduate Institute Dean of Students to identify local organizations working on education access and then work with those organizations to identify unfilled needs that could be met by SIT Graduate Institute students. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who wants to work to build campus-community partnerships and encourage civic engagement.

Independent evidence suggest[s] that attending an institution that is a member of Campus Compact increases the student's odds of participating in community service during college."
