Advisor for Int’l Community Engagement in Study Abroad

This position provides the point-person for Community Engagement/Service Learning in the Office of Internationalization. The position reports to the Director of Study Abroad and works with the entire study abroad team. The advisor is responsible for developing new semester-based programs that will enhance the Cherrington Global Scholars program and will manage short-term service learning programs in the Study Abroad Office. The advisor works closely with students, the University Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL), faculty and staff leaders, and various offices on campus. The advisor will also take on limited advising duties for traditional study abroad programs. Full-time, staff benefited position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two years experience working with international service/engaged/community-based learning programs at a postsecondary institution or third party provider; experience with program development.
  • Understand links between academic and community-based learning; cross-cultural empathy and awareness; strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; strong computer literacy.
  • Team player; ability to communicate well with other staff; positive attitude; willingness to be flexible when developing programs. Must be able to multitask and work independently while recognizing the need to participate in group decision-making.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Research, plan and develop new community-based service-learning programming for the Cherrington Global Scholars program and short-term courses.
  • Meet with students who are considering taking part in international community-engagement programs (Cherrington and short-term) and advise them on program options and details.
  • Prepare and post job descriptions for leaders; respond to inquiries; review applications; schedule and conduct interviews; select leaders. Provide support for Program Directors and Coordinators.
  • Demonstrate creativity and effectiveness in marketing the International Community Engagement programs through all marketing avenues.
  • Manage a limited number of country-specific, traditional study abroad programs at the discretion of the Director of Study Abroad. Become knowledgeable of the programs, advise students, process applications, coordinate payments and housing arrangements.
  • Work with program leaders, CCESL (Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning), and the FSLC (Faculty Service Learning Committee) to develop clear measurable outcomes and effective assessment and program evaluation tools that help measure learning outcomes and program goals.
  • Work with the Director of Study Abroad, the Vice Provost, and Risk Management staff to achieve and maintain compliance with all risk management standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a field related to international education preferred.
  • Overseas living experience, demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff, students and parents in a higher education context preferred.
  • Ability to use a second language preferred.
