Summary of Essential Job Duties: The purpose of this position is to promote community service and cultural exchange on the local, national, and international levels through direct service and immersion programs. The Alternative Breaks (AB) Coordinator will facilitate student efforts to heighten social awareness about concrete social challenges faced by poor and marginalized communities and empower students to approach service as a mutually-transforming partnership with the community being served. This position will focus on student leadership in the areas of service, reflection, and action on behalf of justice, in keeping with the mission and tradition of Loyola Marymount University.
1. Promote the mission of Loyola Marymount University and the Center for Service & Action (CSA).
2. Serve as the Coordinator for the Alternative Breaks that take place during official student holiday periods (Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer).
3. Supervise the AB Student Directors Team to identify, develop and maintain relationships with host communities (domestic and international) that present diverse opportunities for service, immersion, and mutual exchange.
4. Recruit, train and supervise all student leaders as well as student, staff and faculty participants.
5. Work with LMU faculty, department and colleges to develop Alternative Breaks that integrate the “8 Components of a Quality Alternative Break Program”, developed by the BreakAway organization, into academic courses.
6. Develop co-sponsorships of AB trips with departments, clubs and faculty unrelated to academic courses.
7. Manage student payments, payments to agencies, individual trip expense reports, and scholarship funds with a total budget of over $130,000.
8. Ascertain that each immersion opportunity complies with LMU policies regarding safety, liability and risk management.
9. Facilitate opportunities for personal and group reflection and sharing experiences of the Alternative Breaks program with the larger LMU community.
10. Develop evaluations and other tools for assessing the efficacy of alternative breaks for staff and student participants.
11. Serve as a resource to the LMU community for international service opportunities and projects.
12. Collaborate on a national level with BreakAway and Alternative Break/Immersion programs at other university and college campuses.
13. Program events that invite the entire university community to consider and participate in various aspects of community service, civic engagement, and action towards justice.
14. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Experience: A minimum of two years experience working in international development, the non-profit sector, student immersion program management
and/or higher education programming.
Experience in domestic and international community service and/or experiential education, preferably with college or university level students.
Experience with travel in low-income communities, developing countries with basic food and shelter, public transportation, and community based volunteer activities.
Ability to evaluate Alternative Break sites in domestic and international settings to ensure safe and meaningful student experiences that benefit the needs articulated by the local community.
Understanding of student development concepts and theories; strategies for intercultural communication and conflict resolution; social analysis strategies; student programming; methods of promotion and publicity; fundraising; reflection activities, and university mission.
Must be able to effectively train students for competent leadership that includes group dynamics, direct service, facilitating reflection, motivating for lifelong commitments to service, justice, and compassion.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and motivational skills are necessary.
Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of MS Word, Excel, social media tools, on-line survey software, and web page publisher systems.
Required Education: Typically a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, international development or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
