About Points of Light Institute and the Civic Incubator
Points of Light Institute inspires, equips and mobilizes people to take action that changes the world. The Institute has a global focus to redefine volunteerism and civic engagement for the 21st century, putting people at the center of community problem solving. Points of Light Institute operates three dynamic business units that share the mission: HandsOn Network, MissionFish and the Civic Incubator, which includes generationOn and AmeriCorps Alums.
The Civic Incubator creates innovation in civic activation – bringing together and supporting emerging service solutions and new ideas through social enterprise, mergers, and joint ventures. Currently it includes AmeriCorps alums, a youth service unit called generationOn, global volunteerism (international HandsOn affiliates), and Corporate Strategy and Volunteerism (Corporate Service Council).
Role: Intern, Civic Incubator (Fall)
Title: AmeriCorps Alums Intern
Time Commitment: 20 Hours Per Week,
Stipend: Five Hundred Dollars Per Month
Dates of Position: August 15, 2011. Minimum of 2 months with possible extension
Major Desired: Open

Summary of Position:
This internship is designed to provide the intern an opportunity to gain process, project management and team building skills working with the Civic Incubator AmeriCorps Alums team members and designated national chapter staff. In addition the intern will have the opportunity to participate in departmental and organizational staff meetings, network with industry leaders, attend webinars and trainings as well as contribute to thought leadership and practice in the sector.

The vision of AmeriCorps Alums is that the lifetime engagement of alumni is a transformational force for change in America’s communities. Successful candidates will be familiar with AmeriCorps, have significant volunteer experience, and perhaps even be an AmeriCorps alumni themselves.

The successful candidate will be a creative and positive team player with excellent process management, communication and organizational skills who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.

Duties:
• Social media communications to the alumni membership
• Lead a promotional project that involves pitching to colleges and universities nationwide
• Support the Director of AmeriCorps Alums with the management of its annual fundraising event

Qualifications/Experience/Attributes Desired:
• Process planning experience strongly preferred
• Basic Understanding social media applications and platforms
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Working Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word required
• Fundraising experience a plus
• Project Management skills a plus

Learning Objectives:
As a result of this internship, the intern will gain process planning, project management, fundraising and team-building skills; understand the communication and operational processes between national organizations and its local chapters; develop experience working in a cross-functional team environment; and, have the opportunity to participate in departmental and organizational staff meetings, network with industry leaders, attend webinars and trainings as well as contribute to thought leadership and practice in the sector
