Position Overview
The Promise Fellow will help build MNCC’s capacity to collaborate with the Minnesota Alliance With Youth, other Statewide Partner Network members, and School Community Partnership sites in order to address the educational achievement and civic engagement gaps. Position responsibilities include:
- Connecting School Community Partnership sites with leaders at higher education institutions in the local
- Developing stories or case studies that document the nature and results of high-quality civic engagement initiatives
- Helping to organize a series of regional forums on evaluating the outcomes of civic engagement
- Participating in planning and publicizing a summit on dropout prevention
- Supporting a statewide initiative (pending funding) to enhance community colleges’ involvement in mentoring with a positive youth development and engagement focus
Additional responsibilities:
- Assisting supervisor in keeping program records and evaluating program outcomes, making changes as needed based on evaluation data
- Participating in all Alliance and AmeriCorps required meetings and assignments
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years old*
- U.S. citizen or U.S. National or have status as a Lawful Permanent Resident Alien

Qualifications:
- Community engagement commitment and experience
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Interest in youth, service, education, and non-profit work
- Able to deal effectively with ambiguity of tasks and able to take initiative
- Ability to collaborate and communicate well with others from a variety of backgrounds
- Self-motivated, able to work independently without daily supervision—strong organizational skills a must
- Able to present oneself in a highly professional manner and be an ambassador of the program
Desirable characteristics:
- Associates or Bachelor of Arts Degree in community or youth development, education, or related field
- Volunteer experience and desire to develop a strong ethic of service
- Experience working collaboratively with youth and adults
- Commitment to positive youth development
Typical work environment:
- Able to work at a computer for up to 8 hours per day
- Able to work in environment that is quiet but with many people demanding attention
- Able to work independently without much direction
Benefits:
As a full-time AmeriCorps member, Promise Fellows serve 1700 hours from August 15, 2009 to August 14, 2010 and receive: a modest living allowance (approx. $950/month); basic health insurance; qualified student loan deferment; a $4725 Education Award upon successful completion of service; and ongoing, extensive support and training.
