The Position: The AS Community Service Coordinator, under the direction of the AS Executive Director, works with students and staff in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, service learning, leadership, student government, student organizations, and student life. The Coordinator is an employee of the Associated Students of Sonoma State University (AS), the university student government and a student run auxiliary corporation. The AS is a $1.9 million auxiliary corporation that is charged with providing student voice and a variety of co-curricular elements, including service learning activities, campus programming, leadership development and student support services. The Coordinator provides advising, guidance, and support to the student employees and student leaders (approximately twenty-two) who coordinate and manage the Join Us Making Progress (JUMP) Program, the co-curricular service learning program of the Associated Students. The JUMP program consists of several programs designed to create volunteer opportunities for Sonoma State students and to meet the needs in our local community. The Coordinator supports the student leaders in recruiting, training, orientating, and leading volunteers in service projects and events. The Coordinator also has responsibilities related to the Associated Students and Sonoma State’s Student Life Team including advising student leaders, working with the leadership program, facilitating presentation and assisting chartered student organizations all in an effort to foster a well-developed comprehensive co-curricular program based on the developmental and educational needs of the students. External to AS, the Coordinator supports service learning by maintaining effective relationships with the Center for Community Engagement, the Career Center, local non-profits and community agencies so that students have the opportunity to explore volunteer experiences.
Qualifications: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the social or behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job related field; and equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program area or a related field. A master’s degree in higher education administration or student affairs is preferred and may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Requires knowledge and experience working with students, student leaders, student volunteerism and service learning and student clubs and organizations. This includes knowledge and understanding of student development theory and student personnel administration; knowledge and experience with leadership development programs in the college environment; the ability to advise and lead students both independently and in groups; assess and evaluate students in their development; assist students in planning and organizing complex and detailed service oriented activities and events; work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, staff and the general public; secure a full working knowledge of practices and procedures of a university auxiliary and a public university; recognize multicultural, multisexed, multiability and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work and implementing long-range planning improvements; work independently and as a collaborative team member; set and follow boundaries in working closely with student groups; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; be flexible in working with multiple ideas and approaches; reason logically, evaluate data, make verbal and written presentations; adapt to change in the work environment; work in a rapidly changing environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged; and quickly and willingly learn new computer programs. Demonstrated ability to utilize complex financial and accounting guidelines and procedures in the production of campus wide activities and events; sound fiscal and budget management; and to make decisions and carry out actions having implications with regard to other programs and/or service areas. Requires demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication; demonstrated conflict resolution and mediation skills; strong ability to organize, prioritize and multitask in a timely manner; and intermediate computer proficiency with MS office, database programs, internet and email. Salary and Benefits: The salary range is $3,519 to $5,002 a month. Starting salary placement will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full time, exempt position, year round. Benefits include extensive health, dental and vision care, and retirement system membership. This position does not constitute state employment.
