Assistant, Associate or Full Professor – Open Discipline with Expertise in Experiential Education & Pedagogies of Engagement

The New Community College at CUNY - New York, NY

The New Community College at CUNY (NCC) seeks an accomplished educator to serve on the faculty and support the culture of teaching and learning across the institution. Experience with professional development in higher education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and practices central to the New Community College’s educational model such as learning communities, differentiated teaching, experiential education, problem based learning and inquiry based learning are requirements for this position. The successful candidate will be committed to preparing urban community college students – who typically enter unprepared to do college work – for academic success and completion.

Located in midtown Manhattan, NCC is committed to using a range of innovative approaches in order to significantly improve student learning, retention and graduation. NCC currently offers five majors: business administration, information technology, human services, liberal arts and sciences, and urban studies, and will offer additional programs in the future. The College admitted its first cohort of 300 students in August 2012.

The general responsibilities of the faculty member include, but are not limited to: teaching courses in the first-year core and in the majors; advising and supporting students; participating in committees and other governance structures; developing and refining curricula, learning objectives, and assessments; scholarship in the discipline and/or teaching and learning; and performing administrative, supervisory, and other functions as assigned.

Specific responsibilities of this faculty member will include:

  • Working to support regular sharing of best practices and professional development;
  • Actively supporting the use of high impact teaching practices, such as undergraduate research, work-based learning, service learning and other forms of experiential education throughout the curriculum;
  • Designing and leading workshops on teaching and curriculum development;
  • Working with the Office of Partnerships to establish relationships with organizations that can contribute to and benefit from the College’s educational model and academic programs.

This faculty member may teach in programs of study beyond the first-year experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Doctoral degree in pedagogy, curriculum development or any field related to the College’s first-year experience, general education courses or majors;
  • A minimum of five years teaching experience;
  • At least three years experience in higher education professional development;
  • An understanding of community college students’s assets and challenges.

Additional consideration will be given to applicants with:

  • Experience developing and providing professional development for environments similar to the New Community College;
  • Experience teaching in learning communities or linked courses;
  • Experience using high impact teaching strategies such as project based learning, experiential education, service learning, e-Portfolios and/or peer mentoring;
  • Experience developing curriculum according to institutional and program based learning outcomes;
  • Capacity to establish partnerships with the public and private sectors.
