Assistant/Associate Professor of Textile, Apparel, and Merchandising

Indiana State University - Terre Haute, IN

Serve as the coordinator of the Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising (TAM) program and have teaching responsibilities that may include: Textiles, Retail Buying, Fashion Forecasting, Event Planning, Weaving, and Garment Construction. Provide leadership in assessment, curriculum development, academic advisement, and program-related student organization. Maintain textile and construction laboratories. Establish a research agenda in an appropriate academic area, including grant writing and publishing.

Master’s degree in Textiles; Fashion Design; Fashion Merchandising, or a related area required, along with ABD. Ph.D. preferred. Completion of doctorate within two years is required for continued employment. Candidates must also have excellent communication and organizational skills, and be ability to work with a diverse student population. Preference will be given to candidates who possess some or all of the following:
• work experience in the domestic or global fashion markets
• knowledge of fashion merchandising including buying, planning, marketing, retailing, product development, trend forecasting, visual merchandising, and licensing/branding;
• knowledge of industry sewing and garment construction including tailoring, flat-pattern design, embellishing and fashion show production;
• ability to foster key networking opportunities between industry professionals and students to provide field trips, job shadowing, internships, seminars, and industry events;
• experience in event planning and fashion show production;
• ability to develop and adapt curriculum in response to industry needs.

The TAM curriculum prepares students for careers in all three areas of the industry: Design, Textiles, and Merchandising. The program can be personalized to include a double major and/or multiple minors, a semester to study abroad, and internships. Since moving to the College of Technology in 2010, the program has experienced a significant increase in enrollment (over 70 undergraduate majors), has acquired state-of-the-art equipment, and has designed new laboratories for textiles testing and clothing construction. The College of Technology has 38 faculty members and is organized into five departments: Aviation Technology; Applied Engineering & Technology Management; Built Environment; Electronics, Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology; and Human Resource Development & Performance Technologies.
