Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Urban Studies (Tenure Track) – The New Community College at CUNY

The New Community College at CUNY - New York, NY

The New Community College (NCC) at the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an innovative educator in Urban Studies to join its faculty to teach in the curriculum’s first-year experience of interdisciplinary coursework rooted in experiential learning activities with New York City as a primary text and laboratory. The successful candidate will be an effective educator committed to working with urban community college students, who typically enter unprepared to do college work, for academic success and completion. To do so, the candidate must skillfully make use of a range of effective curricular, pedagogical and support strategies and be flexible and open to sharing and learning from others. The candidate must be committed to the College’s vision to serve a linguistically and culturally diverse student body and to teaching in the first year experience. This tenure-track appointment will begin in the Summer/Fall 2012 semester.

Additionally, the successful candidate will teach students to critically analyze urban social issues and contemporary problems and to study urban life, communities, government and services across the disciplines to prepare them for further studies and/or careers. S/he must also support the development of informed and thoughtful students, encourage them to appreciate their relationship to the unique place in which they live and work, and prepare them to be active citizens in their communities. As a faculty member, s/he will have an active and ongoing role in the development and instruction of the first year program, particularly the City Seminar and Ethnography of Work.

The general duties of the faculty member include but are not limited to teaching courses in the first-year core and in the majors; advising and supporting students as they progress; participating in committees and other governance structures; scholarship in the discipline and/or teaching and learning; and performing administrative, supervisory, and other duties as may be assigned.

Prior to NCC’s opening, appointed faculty and staff will work as a team to develop programs at a new institution dedicated to rethinking community college education to improve student learning and completion. Candidates will have the capacity to work with their colleagues to develop courses and learning goals, create learning communities, and define and participate in faculty development initiatives. They will be comfortable crossing disciplinary boundaries, and will be expected to develop and teach interdisciplinary courses as well as in a major field.

Minimum Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in an Urban Studies related social science discipline or adjacent non-social science discipline required.
