Position Summary:
At the policy level, the Associate Director will have responsibility for overseeing the safety/security of students service in both domestic and international service placements, plus on-call responsibilities for emergency situations. S/he will research and draft new policies and guidelines for approval of international service placements and providers.
At the programming level, the Associate Director will assist individuals and groups of students with identifying appropriate service placements, both domestic and international. He/she will also advise students regarding safety and security, group leadership, emergency protocols, and fundraising. He/she will work with other student-life offices on campus that also engage students participating in international programs. Additionally, he/she will process all associated financial transactions and travel envelopes.
This is an end-date position currently funded through June 30, 2017. Continuation beyond that date will be conditional on securing additional funding.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
30% – International Service Program Responsibilities:
- Advise and counsel students on all aspects of Center for Civic Engagement service abroad opportunities.
- Primary programmatic focus for international activities will be on the Loewenstern Fellowships and Rice Developing World Student’s Scholarship, but will also assist with other programs located in the Center for Civic Engagement that include international experiences.
- Develop, plan, and implement pre-departure orientations specific to service abroad programs to be held up to twice each semester.
- Conduct site visits to review programs and gather up-to-date information about program partners and local environment in which the students serve and live.
- Summarize visits and make recommendations to the director based on observations and interactions.
- Collaborate with staff from all units within the Center for Civic Engagement and develop consistent training and advisement protocols for students serving abroad.
30% – Domestic Service Program Responsibilities:
- Provide direct advisement to Site Leaders for alternative break service trips, including site and budget development, logistical planning, and educational content.
- Manage the development aspects of the alternative break program, including Owls Who Can Cook fundraiser, Reliant Stadium fundraiser, personal solicitations from service immersion programs, alternative break student fundraisers, and grant research and applications.
- Manage the advertising, recruitment, and selection processes for the alternative break program.
20% – Risk Management and Policy Development Responsibilities:
- Research best practices for international and domestic risk management with respect to service-based travel.
- Develop and manage an approval process for service abroad providers, encompassing both individual and group experiences.
- Identify and implement appropriate expansion opportunities for international service.
- Develop and manage on-call process for departmental crisis response when student service groups are abroad.
15% – Shared and Other Program Responsibilities:
- Financial oversight of programs, including processing of financial transactions, TEBM envelopes, grant applications/support, and travel advances.
- Coordinate the recruitment, selection, and training of Site Leaders for both domestic and international alternative break service trips.
- Participate in the planning and staffing of Urban Immersion, a Houston-based summer service pre-orientation program (two one-week sessions in July/August).
- Assist the director in managing the general operations of the Community Involvement Center.
- Represent the Community Involvement Center to the campus and community.
- Respond to appropriate requests from students, faculty, staff, and the external community.
- Market and promote the Community Involvement Center to both internal and external constituencies.
5% – Other Duties as Assigned:
- Perform other tasks and other special projects as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree, and 4 years of full-time professional experience which includes:
- Experience working in higher education environment.
- Experience advising alternative break or other service immersion programs.
- Experience managing an international service program, including analyzing risk and making appropriate programmatic and policy decisions related to environment and partners.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master’s degree (international education, social justice, social work, educational psychology, or related field), and6 years of full-time professional experience which includes:
- Experience working in higher education environment.
- Experience advising alternative break or other service immersion programs.
- Experience managing an international service program, including analyzing risk and making appropriate programmatic and policy decisions related to environment and partners.
