Stanford University, recognized as one of the most prestigious and innovative academic institutions in the world, has an immediate opening for an Associate Director for External Relations in the Haas Center for Public Service, a unit of the division of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs.

This Division, with students as our focus, engages with a range of constituents including faculty, staff, parents, alumni, as well as other groups in the external community. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team of the Haas Center for Public Service, the Associate Director for External Relations manages all aspects of the Center’s fund development, stewardship, donor and alumni relations, communications and external relations efforts. The Associate Director manages two staff (External Relations Coordinator and Communications Director), reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Faculty Co-Directors on selected strategic priorities for the Center. The Associate Director collaborates with Office of Development (OOD) staff and Center program directors on donor relations, fundraising and stewardship.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Resource Development, Fundraising, and Donor Relations (50%)
Create and oversee implementation of a fundraising plan designed to increase financial resources public service programs consistent with the Haas Center’s strategic priorities. Collaborate with the Office of Development in cultivation and solicitation of individual donors. Work directly with Major Gifts, Planned Giving and Stanford Fund staff to advance the visibility of public service at Stanford and to identify and secure new sources of individual support (including family foundations and donor-advised funds) for the work of the Haas Center.

Collaborate with other senior staff in the development of an annual budget plan that incorporates fundraising and endowment resources; participate in direct fiscal management of the Center’s overall budget, year-round. Coordinate teams assigned to prepare competitive grant applications to foundations and government agencies. Direct stewardship implementation for the Haas Center, ensuring that reporting from all program areas is timely, complete, and personalized, consulting as appropriate with primary OOD staff. Work directly with faculty who are Center donors, beneficiaries and/or partners in fundraising and grants work on behalf of the Haas Center.

External Relations and Communications (15%)
Responsible for managing the Center’s external relations and communications efforts, including outreach to alumni, campus and community partners, and the general public, and for ensuring that all Haas Center staff are well-informed and supported in efforts to build awareness about individual program and center-wide activities. Oversee planning, budgeting, implementation and assessment of Haas Center communications, including website development and content; electronic and traditional publications, and representation of the Haas Center in other internal and external publications. Serve as primary staff contact for coordination of university public service work with offices of the Vice President for Public Affairs, University Communications, and the Stanford Alumni Association.

The Associate Director is expected to maintain systems of communication that build Haas Center alumni as part of our donor pool, including an annual appeal and coordination of alumni-related events (i.e., Reunion Homecoming Weekend). The Associate Director will also assist in publicizing alumni involvement with current programs.

Staff Supervision and Management (15%)
Responsible for hiring, managing, mentoring, training and evaluating direct reports, who together with the Associate Director implement the Haas Center’s development, stewardship, external relations and communications efforts. Create professional development plans for direct reports that are appropriate to respective responsibilities and aspirations. Inform reports of management decisions affecting their work; the university, community and national context for public service education; and the Center’s progress toward achieving its stated goals.

Board Development (10%)
With the Executive Director and Faculty Co-Directors, responsible for staffing the National Advisory Board (NAB), an influential group of major donors, foundation and community leaders, many of whom are alumni serving in other leadership roles across the university. Collaborate with leadership and staff to help ensure that advisory board meetings are well-planned, meaningful and effective. Play a lead role in proposing and vetting ideas for new members to complement existing talent on the boards. Plan for regular recognition of outstanding board service through the Stanford Associates program.

Haas Center-wide and Divisional Responsibilities (10%)
Other general staff responsibilities designed to maintain and enhance the infrastructure and community of the Haas Center. This includes active participation in core functions and activities of the Center: staff meetings and retreats; professional development sessions; university, division and/or center-wide committees/task forces and selection committees; center-wide celebration events, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; advanced degree preferred;
• 5-7 years of demonstrated fundraising experience and effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation, and an ability to manage multiple fundraising activities simultaneously (grant writing, donor solicitation, annual appeals, etc.);
• Ability to effectively and creatively manage complex issues, supervise staff, and develop, analyze and monitor complicated budgets;
• Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and self-motivation, and excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Ability and willingness to travel;
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of students, faculty, staff and community partners;
• Demonstrated effectiveness in addressing issues of diversity and multiculturalism and in building community among different groups in university and community settings;
• Ability to effectively utilize and keep up-to-date with software packages (Microsoft Office suite is currently used) and other communication technologies.
• Broad understanding of issues related to higher education. Knowledge related to service-learning and experiential learning is preferred, as is experience in a highly selective academic institution;
• Proficiency working with Postgrads or similar fundraising databases is desirable.
