Position Summary
The Associate Director of the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) provides university wide leadership in the development and implementation of programs and services related to service-learning and community/civic engagement, including faculty programs, curriculum development, and initiatives that engage Bowling Green State University (BGSU) students in high impact experiential learning opportunities. Primary responsibilities include leadership for, and implementation of faculty development programs and a campus culture that supports service-learning and civic engagement programs, coordination of an effective infrastructure for community engagement including campus-community partnership development, development of strong partnerships with academic and co-curricular departments and units, and management of assessment and reporting activities. The Associate Director coordinates a broad range of programs and events, and manages external communications to maximize awareness and understanding of service-learning and civic engagement at BGSU. Responsibilities also include managing office processes, training and supervising staff, and provision of trainings and workshops for both on-campus and off-campus entities. The Associate Director deputizes for the Director in their absence and assists with strategic planning and external fund-raising. Lastly, the individual in this position is actively involved in university, division and department committees, professional development activities, and liaison with external entities.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of programs and services related to service-learning and civic engagement, including faculty programs, curriculum development, and initiatives that engage Bowling Green State University students in high impact experiential learning opportunities:
- Coordinate all aspects of the curricular service-learning program at BGSU including consulting with faculty members and academic administrators on matters of service-learning pedagogy, curriculum development, and community partnerships.
- Coordinate all aspects of the Service-Learning Faculty Learning Community cohorts and maintain on-going contact with all alumni of the program.
- Develop and coordinate professional development activities for faculty and staff members, community partners and students related to all aspects of service-learning and curricular engagement, including workshops, faculty conferences, and engagement in external opportunities.
- Manage all processes related to the identification and tracking of service-learning courses and experiences, and documentation of course content and student outcomes.
- Coordinate and implement policies and procedures to ensure the achievement of best practices in service-learning and community/civic engagement at BGSU especially in the areas of risk management, travel and transportation, and course design.
- Manage transportation and logistical resources for service-learning experiences.
- Develop resources to assist faculty and staff members and students to effectively demonstrate achievement of student learning outcomes, especially via e. Portfolio’s.
- Develop and sustain effective administrative procedures to support high quality community partnerships for service-learning experiences and civic/community engagement experiences:
- Design, implement, and monitor a key risk assessment process for community based learning experiences.
- Assist community partners in structuring their identified needs into engagement opportunities for BGSU partners.
- Manage the annual Volunteer and Community Partnership fair and other programs designed to build mutually beneficial and reciprocal campus–community partnerships to support service-learning and community/civic engagement, including community partner orientation events, professional seminars, Focus on Community Issues programs, and an annual Community Partner Summit.
- Develop and implement ongoing orientation and training programs for students working with community based organizations and projects.
- Develop and maintain strong partnerships with academic and co-curricular departments and units, as well as student leadership programs and organizations, to support initiatives that engage BGSU students in high impact experiential learning opportunities:
- Build strong relationships with Colleges and Departments within Academic Affairs and with other programs relevant to the work of OSL, especially the Center for Teaching & Learning, Learning Communities, First Year Programs, the Office of Global Education, and the Center for Leadership, the Career Center and other relevant units.
- Provide support to, and act as a liaison with, academic and student affairs departments and units engaged in developing service-learning and civic engagement experiences to expand the availability and quality of opportunities.
- Develop partnerships with relevant units such as the Career Center to promote and expand student access to community based internships and experiential learning opportunities including programs such as Summer of Service, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, etc.
- Coordinate a quarterly Community Engagement Network to link relevant campus units focused on experiential learning.
- Manage all departmental assessment, data collection, and reporting activities:
- Ensure that all OSL programs and services have clearly defined assessment and quality assurance plans, as well as measurable learning outcomes.
- Create and coordinate assessment and evaluation processes for all service-learning and curricular engagement experiences to ensure alignment with the University Learning Outcomes, the System of Ohio Metrics, and BGSU’s Strategic Initiatives, and all relevant internal and external reporting requirements.
- Coordinate the Annual Report of Student Community/ Civic Engagement, the Service-Learning Course database, and the Student Service-Learning Course Assessment.
- Coordinate external reporting for the Carnegie Classification process, Campus Compact, President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, Ehrlich Award, and other recognition programs as identified.
- Participate, as needed, in open forums and university and divisional committees related to assessment and evaluation.
- Provide leadership for outreach and dissemination of best practices in service-learning and civic engagement at BGSU:
- Develop and coordinate a wide variety of recognition programs including the annual Service-Learning and Civic Engagement awards program, nomination of BGSU individuals for external recognition opportunities, and targeted marketing to highlight best practices.
- Manage a broad range of outreach and communication strategies for curricular programs, including, but not limited to websites, social media and electronic communication, print media, list serves, and presentations.
- Create and sustain an Annual Report of Student Engagement and regular newsletters highlighting service-learning and civic engagement programs of excellence at BGSU.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Service-Learning, including training and supervision of graduate and undergraduate staff, and participation in on-campus and off-campus committees for a variety of organizational and advisory groups:
- Includes involvement in both BGSU departmental and university-wide committees and boards that focus on academic engagement, program development, and student success.
- Represent the office on community boards and planning groups and state and national organizations focused on service-learning, community outreach and civic engagement.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
- Previous experience administering or coordinating service-learning, community/civic engagement, or related programs.
- Proven ability to design and deliver training and professional development experiences for diverse audiences.
- University classroom teaching experience.
- Demonstrated experience with assessment and evaluation of student-learning and program effectiveness.
- Understanding of community/civic engagement best practices and trends in higher education.
- Proven ability to provide leadership for effective program development and to sustain partnerships.
- Proven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
- Ability to work with diverse campus populations and a commitment to social justice.
- Evidence of ability to work as part of a team and to create an effective and collegial team based working environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for a wide variety of audiences.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree required in College Student Personnel/Higher Education Administration, Education/Teaching & Learning, Public Administration/Non-Profit Management, Organizational Development, or related field.
- Also required three to five years experience in the following areas University or other organization administrative experience, Program development experience, teaching or training experience; two to three years assessment and evaluation experience.

Salary
