ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA MARITIME ACADEMY:
The California Maritime Academy is a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system serving a student population of approximately 850. The campus, situated on the shore of the Carquinez Strait 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, currently offers baccalaureate degrees in five disciplines and includes licensing programs for future merchant marines, coast guard and naval reserve officers. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Early Assessment and Academic Preparation Programs (EAP/AAP): Works as an enabler for the early assessment of 11th & 12th grade students in the California Maritime Academy service area. The Coordinator will communicate, publicize and work with local secondary schools to inform them about the augmented California Standards Test (CST). The incumbent also encourages high school administrators, counselors, and teachers to work with students to become aware of approaching deadlines for CSU admission dates and CST test dates. In addition, the Coordinator will assist schools by identifying courses, tutorials, and supplemental educational materials to increase performance in High School Math and English. Assists in high school activities designed to strengthen student performance, and review high school programs to ensure alignment with CSU placement standards. Community Engagement: Serves as outreach to local and Bay Area regional business & industry, government agencies, and non-profit groups to establish reciprocal relationships. These relationships will have the express purpose of creating written contracts of service for student volunteer placement referred to as community engagement and/or service learning (CE/SL). Contracts will outline the specific nature of service work at each location. Assists Cal Maritime Faculty in CE/SL integration into the classroom. Assists with logistics of student travel and safety to and from campus as well as at the volunteer site. Admissions & Recruitment: Assists with recruitment at area college fairs and high schools.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services, community engagement and/or service learning work experience. A Master’s degree in a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. Knowledge of higher education issues to include remediation and academic preparation. General knowledge of individual counseling techniques. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multi-cultural environment including students, faculty, and secondary school professionals. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong organizational and planning skills and efficiency in handling multiple projects Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to interpret and evaluate problems, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. General knowledge of students services programs outside of that which assigned. General knowledge of California Maritime Academy/CSU infrastructure. Ability to speak in front of large groups.
