POSITION SUMMARY
This position’s primary function is to represent Christ Presbyterian Church in the Congo and to facilitate the ongoing partnership with the Congo Initiative (CI), Université Chrétienne Bilingue du Congo (UCBC) and the people of eastern Congo. There are responsibilities related to CPC and working stateside; and also responsibilities related to CPC’s Congolese partner organizations and working in-country.

POSITION REPORTING
Status: full-time, temporary, exempt position, 40 hours per week, committing to serve in Congo from September 2012 to August 2013.
Reports to:
- For CPC related tasks, staff person will report to the CPC Missions Pastor
- For CI-UCBC tasks and priorities, staff person will report to UCBC Academic Dean, UCBC Administrative Dean, and/or UCBC Rector as it relates to their respective roles associated with responsibilities.
Supervises:
- A team (4 to 6) student interns.
Compensation:
- $15,080 annually, with ability to fundraise supplementary salary
- Compensation paid semi-monthly via direct deposit to U.S. bank account
Benefits:
- Expatriate medical coverage and evacuation insurance
- 2 weeks’ vacation
- Staff member will return to Minnesota once during the year, reimbursable to $2500.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
In Country Responsibilities (Minnesota):
- Serve as the Service Learning Coordinator
- Continue to develop and provide oversight for the Service-Learning Program at UCBC
- Provide recommendations for special offering proposals corresponding to current organizational needs
- Foster and grow the ongoing partnership between CI-UCBC and CPC
- Assist CI-UCBC staff with a variety of tasks
- Facilitate communication between CI-UCBC and CPC
CPC / Stateside Responsibilities
Serve as an organizational liaison for CPC for trip, program and funding opportunities with CI-UCBC. The duties are generally concurrent with but not limited to working stateside:
- Collaborate for trip planning
- Meet with Congo Task Force when stateside
- Be available for church services and fundraising efforts around Congo partnership
- Advise and facilitate CPC’s financial and or support staff
- Attend training and conferences related to in country / CI-UCBC job duties
- Communications will take place between Congo staff, Congo taskforce, and CPC
Missions team regularly as needed.
- Formal reporting relationship will be between Congo staff and CPC Missions Pastor
- Bi-weekly (twice per month) phone conference with the CPC Missions Pastor
- In the event there is a proposal to change any part of the existing partnership programs, Congo staff will first communicate with the CPC Missions pastor before committing to CI-UCBC.
UCBC Job Responsibilities (Beni, DR Congo)
Summary: As an integral part of its mission, UCBC uses service-learning as a tool for community engagement, academic inquiry, and spiritual formation. The Service-learning (SL) coordinator works under UCBC Academic Services to train and support teachers in SL pedagogy. They help UCBC forge community partnerships and bring learning outside of the classroom by designing and facilitating service opportunities. The SL coordinator serves as an advocate for community engagement in academic curriculum, student activities, and university planning. They work with student interns to nurture student leadership through mentoring, maximize program resources, and ensure student representation in planning. The SL Coordinator works with interns to conduct planning, monitoring and evaluation of past, current, and future SL projects. Through meaningful service, the SL coordinator equips faculty and students to improve their community and take part in Christ’s ministry of reconciling all people to God and each other.

Program Planning and Development (30%) – Conduct activities necessary for the development of the SL program as a community and curriculum based experiential education strategy, hot regular collaboration meetings with colleagues, interns, and subject matter experts; create policies and procedures, manage projects, organize program actives, lead radio broadcast planning.

Teacher Support (20%) – Facilitate faculty development workshop concerning service learning and community engagement, create resources for course design and project planning, conduct teacher meetings, coach teachers regarding project development, attend classes, and develop reflection resources.

Teaching and Conducting Research Projects (25%) – prepare course syllabus, learning objectives and evaluation methods, develop teaching tools, collaborate with colleagues for teaching and writing, write academic papers (individually or collaboratively).

Community Partnership Building (5%) – Establish and maintain relationships with organizations, institutions, businesses, and community based groups, preform site visits.

Logistics and Communications (5%) – conduct phone and email based correspondence, regularly communicate with colleagues and community partners, arrange transportation logistics for site visits and day of service events, correspond with logistics and academic services to arrange all necessary documentation for transit and invitations.

Program Evaluations (5%) – Design and execute monitoring and evaluation, assess of partners and projects post service activity, regularly meet with supervisor and write regular reports

Christian Ministry (5%) – personal spiritual growth and transformation are core values of UCBC. Attend chapel and other Christian ministry events; authentically integrate with Christian community as part of personal and professional development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Conduct and comply with church policies as they relate to this position. Requires good hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and computer mouse. Sufficient physical abilities to live and travel internationally. Pass a background investigation with no felony convictions. Able to communicate effectively in English, French, and Swahili with staff, congregation, visitors, and vendors, during work time. Regular and reliable attendance to perform primary responsibilities of the position.
POSITION PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills:
Conceptual and Factual: Service Learning pedagogy, the mission and vision of UCBC, educational challenges in DR Congo.
Procedural: Service Learning planning, monitoring and evaluation
The SL Coordinator should have specific skills in: French, English, and Swahili language proficiency; communication for public speaking in the university setting; teamwork for the collaboration with students, staff and community partners for SL activities; program planning for the management and forecasting of SL events and activities; monitoring and evaluation for SL projects and the overall SL program; organization of people, groups, and projects; cultural adaptability to work in diverse teams, navigation of cross-cultural interaction with visitors, and communicate across various cultures; leadership and mentoring of students; cooperation with various groups: community partners, staff members, and students.
Abilities: Requires the ability to independently perform all of the primary responsibilities and essential functions of the position efficiently and effectively; Workshop facilitation, discussion, and reflection for large and small groups; integration of faith and learning; teaching new concepts using experiential learning techniques; use of computer and computing skills (word processing, printing, slide presentations, and spreadsheets); undertaking research projects (scientific writing) in the field of service learning pedagogy and encourage faculty and students (who are able) to do so.
Personal Characteristics: The service learning coordinator should be knowledgeable, teachable, proactive, patient, confident, resilient, mentally balanced, and have a spirit of collaboration and teamwork; should be a committed Christian who models Christ-like behavior, connects service learning with biblical principles and servant leadership; should be a role model for others in: Christian faith, lifelong learning, youth empowerment, service, and teaching; must be adaptable and maintain a positive attitude under pressure; additional helpful characteristics are intellectual curiosity, extroversion, and risk taking. Spiritual gifts of administration, mercy, and encouragement; excellent communication skills; patient and flexible; proactive, self-directed and take initiative.
Education and Experience:
Undergraduate degree in a related field, e.g. education, sociology, anthropology, community development, or economic development. Preferred experience in education and teaching or community development. Work with educational institutions and/ or curriculum development; work experience with a non-profit organization and or community based organization; knowledge of the development/aid field in their world countries; proficiency in French and/or Swahili is preferred, but must be learned; foreign travel and/or living experience.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to use of computers and travel to foreign countries.
