COORDINATOR FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Coordinator for Community Service supports the growth and effectiveness of student-led community service efforts at Washington University in St. Louis. The coordinator works closely with students to assist them in strengthening leadership skills, community impact, and an ethic of civic engagement. The coordinator is expected to model and encourage respectful involvement in the community and effective program planning. All duties require close collaboration with Community Service Office professional staff and student interns, student leaders, campus colleagues, and non-profit agency partners.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee key community service initiatives, including: Service Trip coordination, training, and advising; Social Change Grants; and University-wide blood drives (includes student intern supervision). (30%)
- Advise student-led community service groups, including: Dance Marathon, Habitat for Humanity, Mr. WU, and Alpha Phi Omega. (30%)
- Coordinate Community Service Leadership Project to facilitate training, networking, and collaboration among student leaders of community service and philanthropy. (20%)
- Provide consultation to students and student groups regarding planning and development of community service and philanthropy initiatives, prioritizing respectful involvement in the community, connecting with community service opportunities, and maximizing the educational experience of community service through discussion, education, and reflection. (10%)
- Contribute to initiatives, meetings, and events of the Community Service Office, units within Campus Life, and the Gephardt Institute for Public Service, including: Service First, Public Service Fair, Faces of Hope, Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award, Community Service Connection email newsletter, student staff training & development, and outreach efforts to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. (10%)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Social Work, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience and passion for working with college students in a professional capacity.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Energy, vision, initiative, creativity, tolerance for ambiguity, openness to change, ability to collaborate, and sense of humor.
- Comprehension of social issues addressed by community service and subtleties of building programs that are respectful, meaningful, effective and sustainable.
- Ability to work frequent evening and weekend hours.
