The Coordinator of Leadership and Service is primarily responsible for the coordination of community service opportunities for campus community. This position will also assist the Director of Leadership and Programming with ongoing leadership education programs and initiatives. The university is dedicated to student growth and development outside the classroom and considers community service and leadership opportunities, especially those which are led by student leaders, an integral part of the learning experience. In supporting the learning environment, the Coordinator of Leadership and Service is expected to be a role model, facilitator, leader and an essential person in the effective process of student life. The successful candidate will assist in the development of educational programs for the campus community. This position reports to the Director of Leadership and Programming within the Office of Campus Life, which is part of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
Leadership Education:
Work with Director of Student Leadership and Programming to develop an ethic of servant leadership on campus
Provide leadership training/workshops for individual students and student organizations
Assist in advising components of Student Government Association, as assigned
Assist with assessment of leadership and service programming
Collaborate with other Student Affairs and Enrollment Management staff members to provide memorable, well-executed events and programs
Community Service:
Advise Community Service Council, a student organization that coordinates volunteer opportunities for Samford students
Serve as liaison between the university and community agencies, recruiting student volunteers for one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities
Educate students, faculty, and staff about community needs and opportunities to get involved
Coordinate Samford Gives Back (a day of service for students, faculty, and staff) during fall and spring semesters
Plan and execute at least one “alternative spring break” trip per year as well as other short-term service trips.
Maintain community service website, social media, and print advertising materials
Create database of service opportunities in Birmingham and make it available to potential student volunteers
Provide oversight of community service budget and coordinate campus and community partnerships to extend opportunities for service through collaborative partnerships
Required Qualifications:
A commitment to and an understanding of a liberal arts education and the ability to embrace and promote the Christian mission of the University
Substantial leadership and coordination of community service/volunteer programs, preferably within a college or university environment
Event planning experience, preferably within a college or university environment
A commitment to shaping a campus environment for leadership and mentorship through education of individual students as well as organizations
Strong leadership, problem-solving skills, budget oversight, risk management and planning experience
Outstanding organization and communication in both written and verbal skills.
An understanding of student development theory and assessment, risk management practices and procedures, and comprehensive approach to student life.
Ability to work some evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to coordinate out of town service and leadership programs
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or a related field
Salary Range: $30,000-$35,000 with benefits
This position will report to the Director of Student Leadership and Programming within the Office of Campus Life.
