CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The City University of New York will launch a major new University-wide initiative called the CUNY Service Corps in the fall of 2013. The Service Corps will build on CUNY’s legacy of service in New York City and on the programs currently in place offering experiential and service-learning, community service, and internship opportunities for students. Service Corps projects will be focused on meeting the City’s most pressing needs in four thematic areas: community and public health; built and green infrastructures; the education of children and adults; and economic development. Service Corps projects will help support participating students’ success in college and preparation for the workplace by making meaningful links between projects and college coursework and majors, fostering structured reflection among participants, and offering students valuable work experience and exposure to real-world careers. Student projects will be during the academic year in community organizations, schools, government agencies, and working on research and planning efforts with individual CUNY faculty members.
To promote community-engaged knowledge, leadership, service, academic success and workplace readiness, the CUNY Service Corps program will use New York City as a context for learning with opportunities for students to gain work experience and develop skills in leadership, civic engagement and advocacy. This spring, the University is identifying service projects and allied partner organizations and sponsor sites, along with participating colleges and students. All members of the CUNY Service Corps will participate in the program’s initial co-curricular model development, launch, implementation and future expansion, as well as enhance partnerships between the University, its colleges and external organizations.
The City University of New York seeks an entrepreneurial and dynamic professional to serve as the Student Outreach and Support Specialist of the CUNY Service Corps to develop and implement strategies for recruiting, interviewing and selecting a diverse pool of target students to participate in various enrichment, experiential and service learning opportunities with New York City business and community partner organizations; and training and supporting students for these engagements, from application through completion. The Student Outreach and Support Specialist will help develop the student training curriculum, ongoing support activities, and related program components to reduce barriers to successful completion and learning. Reporting to the University Director of the CUNY Service Corps, the Student Outreach and Support Specialist will manage a centralized student outreach campaign to inspire student interest and participation.
Other duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Plan and implement student recruiting events, and centrally coordinate the student application and selection process with participating colleges.
- Develop and implement student marketing strategies to promote interest and participation, and engage in outreach activities with students, faculty and staff.
- Develop and conduct workshops and other activities to prepare students for engagements, support their success during engagements and facilitate their reflection before, during and after their experiences.
- Provide training, coaching, guidance and related support services to participating students.
- Train faculty and staff members at participating colleges with student interview and selection methods.
- Assess student learning and evaluate experiences and contributions to participating organizations and the community.
