Macalester College - St. Paul, MN

Macalester College seeks a Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship (IGC) to fulfill the College’s ambitious vision for this program, which is integral to its mission-driven commitment to internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. Established in 2005, the Institute’s mission is “to encourage, promote, and support rigorous learning that prepares students for lives as effective and ethical ‘global citizen-leaders’; innovative scholarship that enriches the public and academic discourse on important questions of global significance; and meaningful service that enhances such learning and/or scholarship while enriching the communities within which Macalester is embedded.” The IGC is well-positioned to extend its reach and impact across the College’s academic program. This work will require a Dean who possesses the inclination and ability to reach out to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to build programming and support, a Dean with strong consensus-building skills, management skills, a willingness to explore innovations and take risks –and a clear understanding of the liberal arts.

The Dean of the IGC reports to the Provost. Responsibilities include strategic planning for the Institute and guiding the operations of its three constituent parts: the International Center, the Civic Engagement Center, and the Internship Program. The Dean of the IGC will have a close working relationship with the Dean for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Successful candidates will have demonstrated leadership in higher education and have the ability to be an articulate spokesperson and effective advocate for the Institute. Candidates should hold an earned doctorate or have comparable experience and have a proven record of scholarly achievement in any of a variety of areas related to civic engagement, internationalism, and/or multiculturalism. The Dean will hold a faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department and be expected to teach two courses per year.
