Xavier University is seeking applications for the position of Director of the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning. This position begins June 1, 2011.

The Director of the Eigel Center must be able to articulate a clear vision that makes the Center the hub of community engagement that strengthens collaboration with faculty, students and student development personnel in relation to community partners, especially in the surrounding communities of Evanston, Avondale, and Norwood. The Director should be able to explain the connection between Xavier’s Jesuit mission of educating men and women for others and its commitment to academic rigor.

The Director of the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning is responsible for coordinating faculty and student engagement and external outreach efforts that support Xavier’s Jesuit mission. The Director and his or her staff work closely with faculty, students, University administrators and external partners to create engagement opportunities that promote and enhance academic teaching and research, student development, and institutional citizenship. The position reports to the Academic Vice President and Provost and works closely with the Associate Vice President for Jesuit Identity and the Vice Provost for Diversity to ensure that engagement efforts reinforce and are aligned with the University’s Catholic Jesuit values and its diversity objectives. The Eigel Center shares space, personnel, and community engagement philosophy with the Community Building Institute; the Director of the Eigel Center works in tandem with the Director of the Community Building Institute.

The position has five primary responsibilities:
1. Communicate to all parts of the University and its partners the relationship between asset-based community engagement and Xavier’s Jesuit mission of educating the whole person and its commitment to social justice.
2. Support and coordinate faculty initiatives that integrate community engagement into their teaching and research.
3. Support and coordinate student initiatives involving community engagement.
4. Coordinate institutional resources that support community engagement.
5. Participate in the university’s local and regional outreach through community building.

Qualifications include, but are not limited to: master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred; familiarity with the asset-based model of community engagement; and an established record of organizing and teaching service learning or community engaged courses in any academic field.
