Position Summary:
- Consistent with the university’s Vision for the Second Century, Leadership Rice aims to prepare talented Rice students for leadership and to contribute to an education that, in President Leebron’s words, “equips our students … to make a distinct impact in the world.” Leadership Rice seeks to develop civic-minded leaders for whom the practice of leadership represents a means of impacting their communities. Leadership Rice facilitates the exploration of essential leadership concepts and their application in modern society. The program also builds a network of students, alumni, and community partners who promote each other’s success.
- The Director of Leadership Rice will work with faculty and community partners to offer undergraduates a unique path of preparation to have an impact on their profession and in their community. The program will significantly engage Houston by developing mentorship opportunities that allow students to make substantive contributions to for-profit, non-profit, and government entities.
- Leadership Rice is one of three programs in the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) which is housed in the Dean of Undergraduates division. The CCE identifies and cultivates opportunities for Rice students, faculty, and staff to engage the Houston community and the world through engaged scholarship, active service, and meaningful leadership.
- The Director of Leadership Rice reports to and works closely with the Faculty Director and the Executive Director of the CCE, oversees one associate director and several student staff, and collaborates with colleagues in the Community Involvement Center (also a part of the CCE), Career Services, Fellowships and International Programs, and other departments/divisions on campus. The director advises students and may teach (depending on qualifications).
- The Director will strengthen existing programming and develop new programming; maintain and develop community relations; build partnerships with Rice faculty and administrators; apply for and manage grants; implement and maintain the budget; and assess the learning outcomes of the program.
Education Required: Master’s Degree (Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement.)
Experience Required: 3 years related professional experience.
Education Preferred: PhD or other Doctoral Degree.
Experience Preferred:
- Record of fostering leadership development.
- Significant leadership experience.
- Program administration experience that includes: strategic planning, staff development, public relations, advising, research, writing, assessment and budgetary oversight.
- Network of professional contacts in Houston and in other major US cities.
Other Skills Preferred:
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; good listener; open to feedback.
- Ability and willingness to fund-raise and write and manage grants.
- Ability to frame the vision and structure of the program.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain strategic alliances with external organizations.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain inter-disciplinary alliances with internal departments, faculty, and organizations to broaden the support and strength of the program.
- Ability to work well with people at various levels and within many types of organizations (academic, for-profit, government, NGO).
- Familiarity with MS Office and Banner.
