The Center for Student Leadership provides essential programs, services and resources for the co-curricular student experiences at UC Berkeley. The department falls within the Dean of Students portfolio and coaches students to positively impact their communities through educational leadership opportunities. The department’s goals span three programmatic areas:
• Leadership Development offers transformational leadership experiences to any student with the goal of helping them become ethical leaders who contribute to their communities and effect positive social change.
• Student Involvement provides advising, event planning, group facilitation services, and workshops on behalf of the 900+ registered and sponsored student groups.
• Fraternity & Sorority Life provides advising and mentoring to more than 60 chapters and more than 2,200 members of Greek-letter organizations at Berkeley, including traditionally African-American fraternities and sororities and multicultural Greek organizations.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director provides overall program oversight of a comprehensive portfolio offering co-curricular and curricular opportunities for students through an integrated program of leadership development, education, and experiential education. The Director oversees and manages the Center’s programs which include student clubs and organizations, student leadership programs, the debate team, and fraternities and sororities. This position works collaboratively with the senior leadership of the Dean of Students to develop student-focused initiatives that strengthen co-curricular learning, support the mission of the University, and enhance the undergraduate student experience.
The Director serves as the campus expert on student life issues and provides critical information directly to high-level campus administrators used in making crucial decisions. The Director represents the campus to parents, governmental agencies, national bodies, legislators, city officials and the press on highly complex and politically sensitive institutional issues involving students. As such, the Director has a proven track record in supporting culturally and ethnically diverse environments, collaborative teamwork, and effectively working with students, student organizations, faculty and administrators.
The Director manages a portfolio of 8 professional staff, 12 part-time students and 30 student volunteers and manages a budget of over $850K including registration fees, state and opportunity funds, income, grants, and gifts. All professional staff report to the Director.
CORE COMPETENCIES: The successful candidate must possess experience in student group advising, leadership development, Greek life, campus events management, crisis response, risk management and strategic planning. Further, strong oral and written communication skills; planning; organizing; effective time management skills; the ability to analyze and interpret financial and other data; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives; the ability to anticipate and solve problems; and, an understanding of the mentoring process with respect to students and the University community. Candidates must have demonstrated experience preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries and proficiency in the use of common desktop software applications. It is preferred that the candidate have experience at a large, residential university and an understanding of political protests, policy interpretation, staff concerns, donor/community demands and student group conflicts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Student Affairs\Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Student Services or related field of study and five years (post graduate work) of experience in higher education administration or programs closely related to leadership and civic engagement.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Seven or more years experience in leading a comprehensive program in a higher education setting that incorporates leadership development, fraternity and sorority life, and student organization programs and services. Experience in staff supervision at the college/university level.
