Director of Community Based Learning

College of the Holy Cross - Worcester, MA

The College of the Holy Cross seeks to hire an administrator experienced in community-based learning to lead its endowed Donelan Office of Community-Based Learning. In keeping with the Jesuit Mission of the College to educate “men and women for and with others,” the shared vision for community-based learning is that students be given the opportunity to combine engagement with the greater Worcester community with an enriched academic experience that explores basic philosophical, religious, social, and ethical questions. In support of that vision, the Director is responsible for creating and maintaining academic partnerships between Holy Cross and the Worcester community.

Responsibilities: The Director works closely with faculty members to develop community-based learning courses or components for existing courses; works with community representatives to identify partnerships; assures the appropriate placement of students and subsequent follow-up and evaluation of the learning experience at the sites; coordinates both faculty development workshops and workshops for staff members of partnership sites; and coordinates logistical support for all community-based learning sites. The Director will teach one course each year relevant to the mission of the Donelan office. The Director acts as the “public face” of the program in fulfilling these administrative, organizational, and public-relations responsibilities.

Administration: The Donelan Office of Community-based Learning is housed in the College’s Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies (CISS), which also serves as the administrative home of the Academic Internship Program and all of the College’s mission-related concentrations, most of which have CBL components (Africana Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Environmental Studies). Other programs rich in experiential learning opportunities, such as Deaf Studies, also report to CISS. The Director of the Donelan Office of Community-Based Learning reports to the Director of CISS.

Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate significant experience in community engagement and success in working with faculty members on community-based learning initiatives. A Ph.D. is preferred. Academic training in some area of community studies is desirable. An ability to interact with multiple and diverse College and Worcester community constituencies is essential, as are excellent communication and organizational skills.

Salary and Benefits: Competitive.

Deadlines: Apply directory at www.holycross.edu or send a letter of application, resume, three letters of recommendation, and academic transcripts to Human Resources, Attn: Lynne Herring, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA 01610-2395 by Friday, March 30, 2012.
