Job Description Summary

The director of the MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship is a professional staff member in Student Affairs and serves as the primary contact person for community service, civic engagement and service- learning initiatives at LHUP. This includes local, domestic and international programming.

The Director serves as the administrative liaison with students, faculty supervisors and non-profit agency/governmental representatives, and is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and expanding community service, service-learning and civic engagement opportunities for students and faculty.

The Director is also responsible for the administration and supervision of the campus AmeriCorps and VISTA programs.

Specific Duties

  • Integrate community service and service- learning with curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Actively engage faculty, staff, and students in developing and implementing innovative ways to achieve maximum effectiveness in volunteer, community service, and service-learning placements.
  • Write, administer, and prepare reports for annual grants to support community service & service- learning initiatives.
  • Train and supervise the Community Tutoring Program Coordinator Graduate Assistant and the FWS and volunteer students who serve in that program.
  • Supervise the PA Campus Compact VISTA member that supports the initiatives of the MountainServe Center and prepare quarterly reports for PA Campus Compact.
  • Train and supervise all student Team Leaders associated with the MountainServe Center.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the Americorps Education Awards program grant including recruiting, training, supervision and report preparation.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the Engaged Department Americorps program for faculty including recruiting, training, and supervision and report preparation.
  • Responsible for all aspects of, including student safety, domestic and international service- learning programs.
  • Complete an annual survey of classroom assignments that require students to complete community service- learning.
  • Develop strategies for including community service and service- learning requirements as a recognized part of course requirements.
  • Assess effectiveness and impact of student service, service- learning and civic engagement.
  • Make in-class presentations for faculty to place students in service- learning opportunities.
  • Provide faculty with professional development opportunities related to service-learning and civic engagement.
  • Train faculty by providing service-learning pedagogy workshops.
  • Develop and maintain electronic means of introducing and communicating opportunities for service- learning and community service opportunities.
  • Responsible for exploring and adapting appropriate technology that supports community service, service- learning and civic engagement.
  • Review and report annually the types and amounts of community service and service- learning being performed throughout the campus to reporting bodies at the institutional, state and national level.
  • Report annually on the economic development impact of student service and civic engagement.
  • Develop informational pieces for university publications about service- learning and community service.
  • Develop promotional material, including iMovies, about LHUP’s community service, service- learning and civic engagement initiatives to heighten awareness among the LHUP community, potential students and external parties.
  • Develop mechanisms with academic departments for recognizing students’ contributions to community service and service- learning activities.
  • Coordinate with local and global community- based organizations (in partnership with international partner schools and the Institute for International Studies) to identify and promote opportunities for community service and service- learning.
  • Represent LHUP at the PA Campus Compact, Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development, PennServe: Governor’s Office of Citizen Service, Campus Compact, and the U. S. President’s Community Service Honor Roll.
  • Liaison with internal and external parties in conference programming that promotes community service, service- learning, civic engagement and global citizenship initiatives.
  • Responsible for all budgetary matters and daily functioning of the MountainServe Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have National service program management experience, and professional experience with community service, service- learning and community development.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and training/programming skills; knowledge of campus-based service and service-learning programs; a strong commitment to serving a diverse university population; knowledge of global service- learning programming and cross- cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, employers, community-based organizations and nonprofits as well as nongovernmental organizations.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects
  • Work independently
  • Write and coordinate grants and adapt to many time demands.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
