The Office of the Provost at SMU is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Director of Engaged Learning to lead SMU’s new Unbridled Learning: Engaged Beyond the Classroom Initiative. http://www.smu.edu/unbridledlearning. The director will be responsible for advancing the mission of student engagement through the creation and sustaining of partnerships and collaboration across campus and throughout SMU’s many communities of learning. This position will report to the Provost.
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: create a forward-thinking, futuristic vision for engaged learning for a research university in a dynamic metropolitan area; work with a newly formed Engaged Learning Advisory Committee, representatives of external communities, and a new Undergraduate Research Coordinator; provide leadership in order to design, implement, assess, and manage engaged learning programs in collaboration with academic and student support units that complement the academic mission of the university; lead strategic planning, program development and assessment and evaluation initiatives; supervise, internally manage and work collaboratively on budgets; and (4)develop and promote cooperative relationships with students, staff, faculty and learning communities; serve as a liaison among faculty, students, staff, and community organizations to promote and facilitate various forms of engaged learning; work with existing experiential learning programs on and off campus to offer a coordinated view of the wide range of existing and new opportunities for students; assist faculty with incorporating community-based learning into new and existing courses; build, maintain, and sustain relationships with learning community partners; coordinate logistical needs; other duties will include managing assessment and maintaining an archive of initiatives and projects.
A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required. Experience in the experiential learning discipline or closely related field. A significant understanding of or experience as a university faculty member is essential. Demonstration of increasing levels of responsibility in areas of learning program development, management and supervision is strongly preferred. Entrepreneurial skills in grants, contracts, and/or gift development are desirable. Experience with risk management and legal issues is a plus.
Candidates must possess ability and willingness to engage diverse constituents in education programs. Must also possess experience with fiscal management.
Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with a wide range of constituents. Must also demonstrate the ability to engage and work with undergraduate students. The ability to use current distance-bridging technologies to expand experiential learning opportunities is essential.
Candidates must possess the ability to conduct informal and formal program need/opportunity assessments. Demonstrated ability and flexibility in exercising both leadership and team membership roles is essential.
