Program Director of Postgraduate Public Service

Summary:
The Haas Center’s mission is to inspire Stanford University to realize a just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships. The Haas Center for Public Service is a unit of the Division of Student Affairs. The activities of the Haas Center and other Student Affairs Divisions traverse both academic and non-academic areas, providing programs and services focused on student development, intellectual engagement, diversity and multiculturalism, and community and responsibility, among others.

Working as part of the Fellowships and Postgraduate Public Service team and reporting to the Director of Fellowships and Postgraduate Public Service, the Postgraduate Public Service Program Director is responsible for providing students with transformative experiences and connections to guide public service career development. Responsibilities include postgraduate public service programming; administration of postgraduate fellowships; related coordination with academic programs, community centers, and student organizations; advising; and related alumni and employer relations. These responsibilities will be fulfilled in alignment with the Haas Center’s strategic plan. The Program Director serves as the primary liaison with the Career Development Center (CDC) and supervises part-time student interns.

Job Responsibilities:

Postgraduate Public Service Program Administration (40%)
Lead and manage the development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of the Haas Center Postgraduate Public Service Program. Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing a vision and direction for the postgraduate public service program, establishing standards of good practice and clear objectives, monitoring progress, and ensuring alignment with the Haas Center strategic plan;
  2. Collaborate with key partners such as the CDC and academic departments to create and implement high-impact programs that utilize alumni and practitioners to inspire and inform students about public service careers in various sectors across the Haas Center’s five public service pathways: Direct Service; Activism; Policy/Politics;
  3. Philanthropy; Engaged Scholarship (including workshops, panels, fairs and networking events);
  4. Work with the Director of Fellowships and Postgraduate Programs to develop postgraduate fellowship program elements, curriculum and evaluation tools to facilitate development in the civic leadership competencies identified by the Haas Center;
  5. Further develop and promote the Fellowships, Internships and Service Programs (FISP) database as a key resource for Stanford and the field;
  6. Connect with peer institutions and external organizations to stay current and contribute to the field on matters related to postgraduate public service opportunities, e.g. external fellowships applications and selection processes, public sector and nonprofit hiring trends, and student development and career exploration best practices;
  7. Recruit and supervise student intern team, including recruitment as needed;
  8. Developing an annual budget and monitoring financial expenditures, adhering to all Haas Center, Student Affairs, and Stanford University financial practices and procedures;
  9. Collect information about student interests/needs, monitor advising requests/activity, obtain feedback from current students regarding postgraduate program offerings and advising, and assist in the design and implementation of program assessment and evaluation;
  10. Recruiting and supervising student interns as needed; and,
  11. Initiating and deepening existing relationships with national service and related programs (e.g. AmeriCorps, Community Health Corps, City Year, Public Allies, Coro Fellows, City Hall Fellows, Capital Fellows, etc.) to ensure effective advising and encourage increased Stanford student participation.

Fellowship Program Administration (30%)
Administer and/or assist in the administration of a variety of postgraduate fellowship opportunities. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing and overseeing all aspects of the Stanford Public Interest Network (SPIN) Fellowship program, including:
    • Cultivate SPIN placements with nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area (primarily) and New York City, with special focus on organizations with alumni connections working in areas/issues related to the Haas Center’s three identified issue themes: health, environment and education. Conduct direct marketing and outreach efforts to recruit potential partner organizations;
    • Utilize campus and alumni leadership to explore possible SPIN program expansion, e.g. geographic vs. issue-based expansion, centralized program administration vs. local alumni committees;
    • Serve on each SPIN selection committee to review all candidates and ensure accurate referrals; and,
    • Maintain relationships with peer programs and create network of SPIN fellowship alumni in order to better support current fellows, provide direction to program development and form connections among Stanford alumni working in the public interest.
  • Assisting the Director of Fellowships and Postgraduate Public Service with the coordination of the John Gardner Public Service Fellowship, Tom Ford Fellowship in Philanthropy, and International Fellowships programs;
  • Coordinating comprehensive marketing and targeted student outreach, recruitment and selection; orientation, evaluation and professional development meetings; and related donor stewardship in accordance with established Office of Development standards;
  • Assisting VIA (Volunteers in Asia) with marketing and promotion of the CJ Huang Teaching Fellowship in China; and,
  • Managing logistics and administrative details associated with application review and selection for all postgraduate fellowship programs, e.g. administer online application intake and distribution; recruit alumni and staff volunteers to serve on selection committees; arrange interview schedules; etc.

    Student Advising (25%)
    Serve as an advisor and mentor to students interested in a variety of public service pathways, particularly those interested in pursuing postgraduate experiences. Responsibilities include:

    1. Advising students interested in the Haas Center’s Postgraduate Fellowships to aid students’ program exploration and ensure high-quality applications;
    2. Completing “advising cross-training” to function as a Haas Center generalist advisor and outreach specialist;
    3. In collaboration with the Undergraduate Fellowships Program Director, creating a developmental framework and advising tool to standardize advise/assistance to students making connections between academic studies, fellowship experiences, and postgraduate opportunities in the public service arena, especially related to the public service pathways, civic competencies, involvement levels, and related opportunities; and,
    4. Providing individual support and resources for students pursuing postgraduate public interest fellowships, internships and other postgraduate opportunities in the public interest and public sector fields, and service-related opportunities within the private sector.

    Haas Center-wide and Divisional Responsibilities (5%)
    Maintain and enhance the infrastructure and community of the Haas Center. Responsibilities include:

    1. Participating in core functions and activities, including staff meetings, professional development sessions, center-wide celebration events, selection committees, etc;
    2. With the team, assessing on a quarterly basis the alignment of postgraduate program activities with implementation of the Haas Center’s strategic plan and making adjustments accordingly;
    3. Building on existing relationships between the Haas Center and other units (e.g. Student Affairs, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, academic departments, etc.) to ensure the Haas Center’s fellowships programs are meeting the needs of students and are effectively integrated into academics.
      Serving on internal Haas Center committees and task forces toward achieving greater organizational effectiveness;
    4. Hosting visitors from other university service centers and providing information and counsel to colleagues interested in establishing education programs;
    5. Representing the Haas Center at conferences and conduct presentations about the education programs as opportunities and funding allow;
    6. Collaborating with other program managers within the Haas Center to ensure coordination of related program development and events and to develop innovative programs that service communities and students; and,
    7. Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or relevant field along with 3-5 years of related experience.
    • Solid understanding of principles and practices of service-learning, particularly in the context of higher education institutions, and personal commitment to public service.
    • Strong interpersonal, advising, and counseling skills; and creating strong working relationships with diverse populations.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality written materials, engage in public speaking, and communicate and interact effectively with diverse Haas Center constituencies including faculty, staff, students, community partners, and donors.
    • Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation, event planning, and external relations.
    • Experience in managing financial resources and in budget planning.
    • Demonstrated experience in addressing issues of diversity and multiculturalism and in building community among different groups in university and/or community setting.
    • Strong managerial skills and ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple assignments under pressure with frequent interruptions.
    • Knowledge of public interest—including public sector—hiring markets, especially in Bay Area or New York City, or a strong willingness to learn these markets.
    • Flexible nature and a willingness to work some evening and weekend hours.
    • Experience and demonstrated capacity working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
    • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office applications, database management software, and facility in using technology in program delivery.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • General understanding of donor relations and stewardship practices preferred.
    • Specific knowledge of public interest career opportunities or networks in the Bay Area or New York City.
    • Master’s degree in Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field.
    • Knowledge about basic risk management standards and procedures.
