The Director of Public Service Research (“PSR”) is the staff member with primary responsibility for directing the Center’s programmatic efforts to promote high quality research with a public purpose. The Director of PSR helps students connect their service experiences and interests to academic scholarship. In conjunction with the Associate Director for Engaged Scholarship, the Director develops the Center’s overall strategy in working with faculty, students, staff and community partners to deepen the support for scholars who conduct research with a public purpose. The Director of PSR will coordinate the Public Service Scholars Program (including teaching the yearlong seminar associated with it), and the community-based Research Fellows Program. S/he will participate in teaching the introductory course, “Approaching Research and the Community.” In addition, the Director of PSR will provide individual advising to students around their interests in research with a public purpose.
The search committee will begin reviewing applications on July 1, 2011.
Job Responsibilities:
Public Service Scholars Program (40%)
Develop and direct the year-long Public Service Scholars Program, including the recruitment, selection, and orientation of student participants; development of effective relationships with honors thesis faculty advisers, community hosts of student research, and other research contacts; donor stewardship and monitoring of program budget; and development of written materials for program publicity and dissemination.
Develop curriculum, and teach the fall, winter, and spring quarter Honors Public Service Research seminars of the Public Service Scholars Program (Urban Studies 198).
Research with a Public Purpose (35%)
Serve as a resource to scholars (undergraduate, graduate, faculty, staff) interested in conducting research with a public purpose. Work with Engaged Scholarship coworkers to facilitate partnerships between university-based researchers and community entities, and to maintain a network of professionals across campus to advise students and foster a culture of public service research. Through consultation and convening staff, faculty and students, conceptualize how students can integrate research with their service commitments and interests. Identify supports and mentors for students, and develop and maintain systems and resources for communicating about this work (e.g., Research with a Public Purpose website). Serve as a key Haas Center liaison with VPUE’s Undergraduate Advising and Research group. Participate with other faculty and staff in teaching Urban Studies 123: Approaching Research and the Community. In consultation with the Associate Directors for Engaged Scholarship and External Relations, write proposals for funding and manage stewardship of programs in public service research. Coordinate all aspects of the Andrea Naomi Leiderman Fellowship, including publicity, application and selection process, and facilitating relationship between recipients and donors.
Community-based Research Fellows Program (15%)
Responsible for administrative aspects of the program, including coordinating the grant application process, preparation of publicity and outreach materials, selection of faculty-student-community partner teams and programming for student preparation and reflection. In conjunction with the Associate Director for Engaged Scholarship, further develop the program in partnership with related programs focused on research and social change from across campus.
Haas Center-wide Responsibilities (10%)
Other general staff responsibilities designed to maintain and enhance the infrastructure and community of the Haas Center. This includes active participation in core functions and activities of the Center: staff meetings and retreats; professional development sessions; university, division and/or center-wide committees/task forces and selection committees; center-wide celebration events, and other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree and/or scholarly and professional accomplishments in a relevant field, indicating an ability to work as a peer with university faculty is required. Ph.D. preferred.
- Experience in the design, implementation and reporting of research, with knowledge and experience with community-based research methodology strongly preferred.
- Teaching experience, preferably at the college level, is desired.
- Understanding of and experience with the principles and practice of student development and ethical and effective community service, and service-learning in a higher education context.
- Demonstrated competence in community partnership building.
- Experience counseling and advising students individually and in groups.
- Demonstrated skill in communication and professional interactions.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in addressing issues of diversity and multiculturalism and in building community among different groups in university and community settings.
