Gettysburg College, a highly selective liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of the Immersion Projects Coordinator for the Center for Public Service. This office is seeking a highly dynamic and innovative individual who has a strong administrative, partnership and education background to serve in this position, which reports to the Director of the Center for Public Service.
In keeping with the College’s mission to educate young people to “think critically and act compassionately,” the Center for Public Service promotes, organizes, and supports community service and social justice initiatives by members of the Gettysburg College community. In this work, we value the exploration of social issues and social justice, community partnerships; student involvement and leadership, faculty involvement, and immersion travel projects.
The primary responsibilities for the Immersion Projects Coordinator for the Center for Public Service are the development and coordination of service-learning (or immersion) projects; including recruitment of student participants, orientation, project leader support, itinerary development and ongoing reflection. The position will also expand partnerships with site coordinators and work with student participants to connect their experiences back to campus and the local community. Potential projects with the local community include connections to courses, civil rights education and advocacy, environmental education, and grassroots community development. The Immersion Projects Coordinator will advise a student leader team (at least 2 students), as well as regularly interact with other students through social justice discussion groups, program planning and more. In addition, the Immersion Projects Coordinator will also support divisional and institutional initiatives. This position requires some evening and weekend commitments.
Qualifications: The Immersion Projects Coordinator should have a thorough knowledge of service-learning and/or experiential pedagogy. The successful candidate must have demonstrated organizational abilities, strong interpersonal abilities, and the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with varied constituencies. Master’s degree preferred. Significant experience in community development and community-based education or similar experience is required.
The position is an 11-month part-time (25 hours/week) administrative appointment.
