The City University of New York seeks an exceptional educator to serve on the faculty of its New Community College (NCC). Experience with student professional development in higher education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and practices central to the new community college’s educational model such as learning communities, ePortfolios, and service learning and experiential education are a requirement for this position. The successful candidate will be a gifted instructor committed to preparing urban community college students – who typically enter unprepared to do college work – for academic success and completion. To do so, the candidate will make use of a range of effective curricular, pedagogical and support strategies and be flexible and open to sharing and learning from others. The candidate must share the College’s vision to serve a linguistically and culturally diverse student body. This tenured or tenure-track appointment (with rank depending on experience and qualifications) will begin in fall 2011. Prior to the establishment of the college the faculty member will be appointed to an existing campus at the University. Located in Manhattan, the new college expects to admit the first cohort of 500 students in the summer of 2012; and will enroll 3,000 to 5,000 students at capacity.
The general responsibilities of the faculty member include but are not limited to teaching courses in the first-year core and in the majors; advising and supporting students as they progress; participating on committees and other governance structures; scholarship in the discipline and/or teaching and learning; and performing administrative, supervisory, and other functions as may be assigned.
Prior to the college’s opening, appointed faculty and staff will work as a team to develop programs at a new institution dedicated to rethinking community college education to improve student learning and completion. Candidates must have the capacity to work with their colleagues and others to develop courses and learning goals, to create learning communities, and to define and participate in faculty development initiatives. They must employ a diverse set of teaching practices designed to improve student achievement, and be open to sharing and learning from colleagues. They also must be comfortable crossing disciplinary boundaries, as they will be expected to develop and teach interdisciplinary courses as well as in a major field.
Qualification Requirements:• A doctoral degree in any field related to the College’s first-year experience, general education courses, or six majors • A minimum of five years teaching experience • A minimum of three years’ experience in higher education professional development
